Speeding, of Course

70-year-old Timo makes the most of his short ride to work. Speeding up on a bicycle ends up in a ditch, but the adrenaline rush leaves a feeling of pleasure.

Director Biography - Anni Sairio, Joonatan Turkki

Anni Sairio (b. 1994) is a Helsinki-based animation artist and graphic designer. She holds a Master of Art’s degree from Aalto University, where she studied animation and visual communication design. Sairio has a particular passion for traditional animation techniques, especially stop-motion cutout animation. Speeding, of Course is Sairio’s second stop-motion film and third short animation.

Joonatan Turkki (b. 1988) is a Finnish filmmaker whose stories are shaped through sound. In early adulthood, Joonatan became interested in film sound and music, which led him to study at Aalto University’s Department of Film. After 10 years of capturing and creating sounds, he discovered that surprising stories can be found in all recordings and off-topic moments from interviews. Cutting and reorganizing these interviews (audio screenwriting) has since become a key technique in his films.

Director Statement

One day, Joonatan found an interview he had recorded with his father, Timo, a few years earlier. Listening back, he noticed how often Timo mentioned his bike ride home from work. Joonatan decided to turn the recording into a radio play and give it to Timo as a fun little gift.

At home, he shared it with Anni, who was instantly inspired. She suggested making a film and quickly created a demo animatic. From that first sketch to the final stop-motion, Anni brought the story to life with a playful vision – a round talking head and a world that draws the viewer into Timo’s experience.

Joonatan and Anni realized that Timo’s joyful 300-meter bike ride held a simple but meaningful lesson: a reminder to cherish the small, playful moments of everyday life.
