Director Statement

"Speak" is more than a film - it's a testament to the transformative power of the human voice. As a director, I've always been fascinated by the complexities of communication and the resilience of the human spirit.

Growing up, my life was forever changed by a remarkable individual who would shape my perspective and inspire my passion. His name was Ssebugwawo, a kind-hearted and diligent man who worked on our family farm. Despite being deaf, Ssebugwawo's dedication, perseverance, and joy were contagious, and he quickly became an integral part of our lives. We admired and respected him, and he brought immense value to our family.

As I spent more time with Ssebugwawo, I began to realize the beauty of sign language and the richness of Deaf culture. His presence in my life sparked a deep appreciation for the Deaf community and a desire to learn more about their experiences.

Though Ssebugwawo eventually left our farm to reunite with his family, his impact on my life remained. Unfortunately, we lost touch after his departure, and I've never had the chance to see him again. Yet, his memory stayed with me, inspiring me to create a film that would honor his legacy and amplify the voices of the Deaf community.

As time went on, I started witnessing firsthand the impact of silence and oppression on communities. I saw how the suppression of voices can erase identities, cultures, and histories. And I knew that I wanted to create a film that would challenge this silence, that would amplify the voices of those who have been marginalized and oppressed

Years later, this passion would culminate in the creation of "Speak". On February 4th 2023, I called a meeting with over 80 deaf individuals from the community. It was a moment that would change everything. As I introduced them to the world of film, I witnessed a spark of excitement and curiosity. The meeting was a resounding success, and "Speak" was born.

From that moment on, I was committed to creating a film that would not only showcase the beauty of sign language and Deaf culture but also challenge the dominant narratives that have historically silenced and erased marginalized communities.

"Speak" is a story about Akia, a young girl born with the gift of hearing in a world where silence has been imposed. Her journey is one of self-discovery, courage, and resistance. Through her eyes, we experience the beauty and complexity of a world that is both familiar and unknown.

As a director, my goal was to create a film that would be both a tribute to the Deaf community and a call to action for a more inclusive and equitable world. I wanted to challenge the dominant narratives that have historically silenced and erased marginalized communities

The film's use of sign language, visual storytelling, and sound design is intentional, creating an immersive experience that draws the audience into the world of our protagonist, Akia. By centering the narrative around Akia's voice and her connection to her community, we highlight the importance of language, culture, and identity.

"Speak" is a film about the power of voice, the resilience of the human spirit, and the transformative impact of resistance and activism. It is a testament to the boundless potential of individuals and communities to challenge, to resist, and to create change.

As a director, I hope that "Speak" will inspire audiences to listen more deeply, to amplify marginalized voices, and to join the fight for a more just and equitable world.
