Private Project

At the height of his popularity, actor Takashi Miyabe was enjoying a smooth sailing life when a weekly magazine reported his infidelity. Takashi was shamed throughout Japan and was forced to hold an apology press conference.

When the conference begins, he is put on the spot by relentless and insidious questions from the press. It is broadcast throughout Japan and the public makes fun of him, criticize him severely, and laughs at him like it's someone else's problem.

Takashi’s wife is a popular actress, Aki Sawada, who is exhausted by the bashing from all over Japan. Takashi and Aki's son, Ryota, is mentally trapped and suddenly attempts suicide, thinking that his parents are being blamed because of his presence. His mother stops the suicide and Ryota survives, but Aki is determined not to let things continue as they are and decides to attend the apology press conference.

Ryo, who was a close friend of both Takashi and Aki, watches the press conference. He is distressed by the press conference, knowing their hardships as they all had worked hard as actors in the past.

As Aki enters the press conference, the reporters get confused and her confession begins. Finally, Aki confronts Takashi with something unexpected.

Director Statement

Apology conferences are rarely found in other countries and are said to be unique to Japanese culture. I believe that the apology conference is symbolic of Japan's culture of reading-between-the lines and peer pressure. This peer pressure can be effective in maintaining control of citizens and eliminating dangerous people, but when taken too far, it has the power to collectively destroy anyone who deviates even slightly and to hurt them excessively.
Recently, there have been cases of celebrities committing suicide due to slander. This phenomenon may be caused by Japan's strong peer pressure. This film expresses the suffocating atmosphere of Japan and I hope that it will give viewers a chance to think about how to live in such a situation.
