Sophia
Sophia is a story about heartbreak. Of a mortal man that loved a perfect, unreal ideal of a woman.
When we are in the throes of an overpowering crush, we begin to create idealized versions of our obsessions. They begin to transform in front of our eyes and become beautiful to an unearthly degree. They are gods and goddesses; cold, cruel and unreal.
This is the story of a crush taken to legendary proportions. The goddess initially appears as a beautiful and perfect vision, surrounded by heavenly light. But underneath her mask her eyes are stark white, lending to an unnerving feeling of otherness, alienness. She is ghostly, unreal, almost imaginary.

A visual artist by trade and a self driven creator with a love for magical realism and fantasy, Pedro Lavin defies reality to craft atmospheric, ethereal films. He conceives otherworldly creatures and worlds, making his inner universe a new reality.
Lavin was born in Mexico City, where he lived until he was 18. He attributes a large part of his visual style to the contrast between vibrancy and darkness present in Mexican culture. From an early age, he gravitated towards art and design, spending most of his childhood drawing and creating. He went on to pursue a career in graphic design at the California Institute of the Arts, where he studied under postmodern design titans Jeff Keedy, Scott Zukowski and Michael Worthington. While there, he became infatuated with motion, animation and film. He dedicated much of his time at CalArts to exploring the relationship between design and film; subtly shifting his career focus to film and animation while retaining a strong foothold in design.
He began his professional career at legendary production studio Psyop, cutting his teeth as a designer and eventually ascending to creative director. He’s completed work for the Coca Cola Company, Nike, FX Network, Estee Lauder and Google among others. Most recently, he directed a short animated film highlighting a sexual assault survivor story for the MeToo organization, which has gone on to recieve great praise and recognition worldwide.
Lavin puts a piece of his soul into all his projects, using his emotions as a compass that guides the stories he tells. His work is a reflection of his own deeply personal experience: his psyche reinterpreted onscreen with unbridled imagination and mind bending visual style. Exploring human sexuality, attraction and fluidity are the central themes of his short films GLAMBEAST, Sophia; and the upcoming I Feel Love. While they contain seemingly separate stories, when brought together, they form a new narrative arc symbolizing Lavin’s experiences as a queer artist. From a captivating goddess unmasked as an unearthly wraith to a dancing creature with a face made of diamonds, Lavin takes the viewer to multiple emotional realms over the course of these films.
Lavin currently lives and works in NYC.
