Someday
Two strangers meet on a 14 hour non-stop flight from Sydney to Los Angeles. Adam is a world-famous composer, but Melody doesn't recognize her flight companion. Along the way, they laugh, flirt and pour their hearts out… a connection made more beautiful precisely because of its fleeting nature.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
For a story that’s all about a chance encounter, that’s precisely how this film
started. I had worked with Katherine Castro a few years ago, and was blown away
by her talent. We both knew we wanted to work together, but the opportunity never
presented itself. Then, one day, out of the blue, I saw Katherine’s post online about
her seeking a writer. I readily answered, and upon hearing her story of a “chance
encounter with someone famous on a plane,” I knew I had to tell that story. From
there, sparked our collaboration on SOMEDAY.
This film is very personal and dear to me. Not only did it allow me to work with
Katherine, but I was able to bring this very real experience of hers to life, through
the lens of my own sensibilities and style.
SOMEDAY is an examination of the nature of relationships – both long-term, and
fleeting… or perhaps of the fact that all our connections are a little bit of both. I
wanted to make a film that’s romantic, but not cliché. Working alongside Katherine
and Chris Santos, I was able to craft two incredible characters – Melody & Adam
– who were simultaneously charming and likeable, yet complex, layered and fully realized.
In the pantheon of “two strangers meet while on a journey” – my inspiration for
this piece, were films like Sofia Coppola’s LOST IN TRANSLATION, and Richard
Linklater’s BEFORE SUNRISE.
I hope people relate to this story and the characters, particularly Melody, who’s
going through something we can all relate to. But more so, this film is about
connection… about the beauty of getting to know someone in the moment. We’ve
all met someone whom we feel a strong connection to, realizing we may never see
them again – and it doesn’t even have to be romantic. A stranger can feel like a
best friend, or a long-lost brother/sister. It’s that feeling of being able to open up
and truly bare your soul to someone. That’s the universality I seek.
Making SOMEDAY was a dream come true. Working with a great cast and crew,
telling a story that was personal to us, and challenging ourselves with shooting a
complicated “tango” sequence – were all experiences I’ll cherish for the rest of my
career. We set out to make something that was heartfelt, sincere, yet didn’t pander
or lean on cliché, so I hope our little film finds an audience.
Best,
J S Mayank
