Simon Maurissen is a self-made filmmaker and photographer from Belgium. He has always enjoyed nature from as far as he can remember. He holds a Masters in geology and is now studying natural sciences through nature guiding.

Simon has now been making nature documentaries for a few years, in an attempt to share his admiration for wilderness with others.

In 2014 he was awarded at the International Nature Namur film Festival in Belgium in the Amateur category, for his first short film about wild Belgian bighorn sheeps. From there he created Bighorn Studio, an audio-visual collective that gathers individuals with a whole range of skills but who all share a mandatory passion for nature.

Together with Oria Jamar in Bighorn Studio’s team, a passionate conservationist, he made another film named « Everyday Marvels » in 2017, that has been seen over 300 000 times online. This short film tries to make people realize that the step before respecting and protecting nature is reconnecting with it: we need to marvel at all the little beauties around us that we tend not to see anymore. We need to go back to nature!

Simon was hired in 2017 by the Natural Sciences Institute of Brussels to make a documentary about a scientific mission in Central African Republic in the Dzanga Sangha National park.

Today, along with the other members of Bighorn Studio, Simon is planning other documentaries, such as Will You Hear Us. This documentary project is, once again, a film that aims to inform people about environmental challenges and remind us that natural spaces are still here, for now, but that they need to be preserved.
