Silver, Speik And Sumpters
In the Triebener Tauern region, traces and traditions of the legendary Late Middle Ages can still be found today. From the perspective of a miner and a muleteer, the life in the 'mine' and on the mountain paths of the region is illuminated. For the first time, the Mur Valley region can be experienced on film in its Late Medieval attire.

The director team of "netta mea" already did several short films and music videos with historical themes, since their very first project, a history drama set in the second century and centered on celtic tribes and the roman invasion in Austria. These days their specialization is on historical documentaries with a major focus on narrative scenes, fun dialogues and a big fascination for working with the ideas of acheology, philosophy and history.
Also the work of the directors is strongly based on a network of creatives, that share their enthusiasm for history and the art of making films.
This documentary is our biggest production yet. But it has become such a milestone in our lifes as filmmakers and also a big step in the way documentaries can look like in Austria, because it was not made, just by a film production team. It was made by a region. The people around the Triebener Tauern Region and in general of Styria were not merely involved, they really carried this production with their enthusiasm and hard work in really hard conditions at times. They built stuff, mobilised crowds, created costumes, brought in scientists and crawled through the caves and mines of this region for us. This is their film - we merely were the people, shouting "Action".
When it comes to the film's aesthetics we tried to create something with the natural, authentic sourroundings of the medieval world. The tunnels you see in the documentary are still the same as 500 years ago. Also minor sets were built for the film with historical accuracy like a cole production site, and others were just medieval castles in a presentable state.
The music was partially composed, especially for the film by experts of Austria, musicians of the medieval music group "rhiannon". They used historical instruments and sounds, as well as modern computer generated orchestral assets to create something unique and atmospheric.
The optic of the film was created by mostly using fast, manual lenses and very mobile light systems, to handle tight, wet and dark situations.
We are very glad that this production has resulted in a very presentable film, with an approach that has not been done in Austria before: Mixing historical documentary making with narrative scenes that are even fun. We hope many people will enjoy our film.
