Director Biography - Jake Thomas

Jake Thomas has been making movies since he was six years old, growing up in Northeast Ohio. Upon first moving to Los Angeles, Jake became a script reader for the former Falcon Theatre, rechristened the Garry Marshall Theater, named after the late owner and creator of HAPPY DAYS and director of PRETTY WOMAN. Since then, Jake has worked for Paramount Pictures, Digital Domain, Lakeshore Entertainment (MILLION DOLLAR BABY), and Warner Bros.

Jake’s previous writing credits include the award-winning western BLESSED ARE THE PEACEMAKERS, COLOR ME FULL, and the animated LEAVES. His award-winning short fantasy film ONE ON ONE screened during the SXSW film festival and was proclaimed by Krypton Radio as “the best short form Superman film we’ve ever seen.”

Jake's debut feature film SHEDDING premiered at the Sidewalk Film Festival in 2019. Filmed with a combination of actors and archival animal footage, it is the live-action fairy tale story of a house cat who mysteriously transforms into a human.

Director Statement

SHEDDING centers on a house cat who gets to explore the outside world through the eyes of a human, and who helps a grieving family find peace. I made this film because I wanted to explore emotional longing. All creatures have appetites. We hunger for something. It may be as deep as wishing to see a missed loved one, or as simple as going outdoors, wishing to feel the sun on your face and the wind in your hair. The characters in SHEDDING all cope differently with their longing, but the shared experience bonds them together, despite such fantastic disparities.

Additionally, the film explores the positive effects that pets have on humans. They bring no agendas or distractions to relationships. Just by bringing their presence and undivided attention, the human soul is lifted.

Thank you for your consideration, and enjoy the show!
