Director Biography - Daniel Song

I, Daniel Song, was born in Hayward, CA. My parents divorced when I was nine. I bounced around until establishing roots in Maryland. I spent my late teens and early twenties struggling with addiction. At the age of thirty two, most of my friends are dead due to the opioid epidemic. I was one of the lucky ones. As a high-school dropout, I worked my way through school and am currently six credits shy of obtaining my bachelors degree in Electronic Media and Film. My life has been a blessing. Looking back at all the tragedies I’ve endured, I’m proud to say that I wouldn’t change a thing.

Director Statement

Since birth, my interpretation of the word “art” has evolved. Today, instead of crayons and messy paint, art means something wholly different. The meaning of the word has changed. To me, writing is more creatively dynamic than any painting or drawing. Cooking is a creative endeavor which yields returns in tastes and smells. Music is Van Gogh for the ears. Everything I encounter is an art form. I am an artist in everything I do. It’s become a way of life. Being in a constant creative state of mind makes me the “artist” I am today.

Documentary filmmaking is my true passion. I realize the impact a great documentary can have on the course of history. I grew up indifferent to them, but now indulge in them. All forms of video-making peek my interest. The art of putting together shots is editing. Doing it to tell a story is creation. Nothing makes me more proud than re-watching a video I made. It is my creation. It can say more than any drawing ever could. The creative possibilities are limitless.

My two interests regarding creativity are writing and filmmaking. I hope to make a film that spreads awareness of an ongoing issue. I hope to bring about change. That’s my goal. I hope to work for a platform from which I can spread knowledge. I want to shed light on dark topics and familiarize them to the masses. That is my driving goal for pursuing video making. I must do my part in making the world a better place. All of that starts with a story and a camera.
