Shadow Town: Is ait a mac an saol

Life in a small town transforms into a strange spectacle
as the world’s largest Irish music festival takes over.

___________

A rural town in Ireland swells to a population of half a million for one week during the world’s largest annual celebration of Irish music, transforming it into a major metropolis of culture, diversity and decadence.

For an epic week in August 2023, the midlands town of Mullingar was completely transformed; when over 500,000 traditional musicians, singers, dancers, actors, artists, street-performers, entertainers, festival goers, revelers and carousers descended for the annual Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann. It is the world’s largest annual celebration of Irish music, language, song and dance; and one of Europe’s foremost cultural festivals.

Shadow Town – Is Ait An Mac An Saol observes this monster cultural phenomenon descending on the rural town of Mullingar, transforming it into another version of itself and after the monster has departed, when its citizenry returns to a new type of normal.

Obviously, a horde of production, radio and TV companies descended on Mullingar to report on the festival, but Shadow Town takes a different approach - documenting the transformation of the town through the vibrant and chaotic canvas of the Fleadh.
Half a million people visited Mullingar to witness the magic of this spectacle, they came from everywhere, encompassing every facet of modern Irish society and its diaspora, as people travelled from every corner of the globe. Every one of them witnessed but also formed part of the spectacle – a human mass of an artform.

Shadow Town captures the tide of emotion, as it pitches and tosses each day, reaching crescendo in the night and dissipating until the streets are quiet again before the whole cycle starts again, each day, throughout the week, forming a collective arc of a majestical event.

Including exclusive performances from legendary musicians Dervish, Rónán Ó Snodaigh, John Spillane, George Murphy, Martin Hayes and Strange Boy; Shadow Town showcases a subterranean and radical dimension to the Fleadh festival.

Shadow Town – Is Ait An Mac An Saol is remarkable for several reasons – it is the first feature length documentary about the Fleadh festival, as well as being the first feature length film made about Mullingar. Incredibly it was made with zero budget, literally for absolutely nothing! And it was made by just five people!

Director Statement

His work is centred around people and landscape. It explores the relationship between both and the often overlooked, everyday scenes and people in them.

Conor is most interested in the ordinary, the familiar and the humour that often goes with it.

His work is often drawn to stories about the simplicities of life, understanding and relatability, and how these stories come from the most unlikely everyday characters and spaces.

The work relies on feeling and sense, and doesn’t follow conventional narrative story-telling practices but allows the viewer space to dream and imagine. Each project is approached through interest, compassion and an attempt to understand the importance of another's stories, ideas, thoughts, routines and actions.
