Shades of the Heart
Our film will chronicle the ups and downs of a romantic relationship from the perspective of Amavi, a university student. Amavi’s inner world is put at the forefront as she experiences a plethora of emotions ranging from intense love to overwhelming pain as the relationship deteriorates. Our film will focus on the raw emotions of the character instead of the outward events, concluding when Amavi lets herself rest and experiences a return of balance.

My name is Talitha Neville. I am the director and screenwriter of Shades of the Heart. Originally from Cape Town, I have also lived in eSwatini and Johannesburg. I’ve been passionate about how movies are made from a young age - the whole filmmaking process has always intrigued me. I started experimenting with storytelling through a lens from the age of 10. I made my first proper short film at the age of 15. My first three short films were all official selections for various local and international film festivals.
This film is an exploration of the depths of the heart, chronicling the ups and downs of a romantic relationship from the perspective of Amavi, a university student. Central to this film is the effects of this relationship on Amavi’s inner world as she goes through two emotional extremes; love and heartbreak. With this film, my team and I have asked the questions: How is the emotional, inner world of an individual affected by the changes that take place within a relationship? How can the inner-turmoil or inner-chaos that heartbreak brings be portrayed effectively on screen?
