Desiree Carcamo is an astrology-obsessed Gen Z and very superstitious scientist once raised in a haunted house that used to be owned by devil worshippers. They tell real stories for quirky, occasionally existential, and paradoxical people. Raised by their savvy, overprotective single-mother and their grandmother, a carwasher who hustled to feed five kids in LA during the 80s, Desiree is inspired by strong, smart, jaded, and loving women. Once a closeted queer in a toxic, conservative So-Cal Christian high school, they are now an openly queer Mexican-Salvadoran-American writer-director, perform-er, and researcher from South Central LA and the Inland Empire.
Being unexpectedly cast in their uni’s dance showcase activated the storyteller inside Carcamo. Since then, they are writing alumni from the Disney-NHMC Series Writer program (2021), won NBCU-Nosotros’ Ya Tu Sa-bes! Monolog Slam (2020), were waitlisted for the Net-flix-NALIP WOC Narrative Short Incubator among oth-ers (2021), and most recently are in post for their debut web series AMIGXS (2022). Carcamo has been part of the development teams at MACRO and earned their bio-engineering masters-bachelors at UC Riverside.
Ser.en.di.pi.ty was made in partnership with FEAST, a Los Angeles not-for-profit organization, whose mission is to promote health and wellness in communities through the power of healthy foods and human connection. We wanted to illustrate through a fictional narrative, the importance of healthy, and Whole Foods, and how the organization and the principles taught there can changes lives, so creating a success story as the basis of our narrative was always the goal.
In addition, at the foundation of the story is the relationship between mother and daughter, so it was important that the film come from a person-first narrative to showcase that Sofia is not just another mom struggling with nutrition, but rather that she has hopes and dreams, and goals.
Within the story, displaying the beauty of community, and the liberating sense of identity outside motherhood FEAST gives to it's participants, were important for me to highlight. The understanding that the film would be anchored in a beautiful, deep, bright, mother-daughter relationship between Sofia and Zoe, but also displaying a human warmth in presentation and production design was key. We used warm browns & yellows with bright red, orange, and green to showcase the power of whole, fresh foods, and healthy living, and how that can change lives.
