The Bomar Brothers, Dean Lee Bomar (20) and Grant Lee Bomar (18) have been making films since the ages of 10 and 8. Grant has matured as a director through a series of unique indie projects supported by Dean's imaginative cinematography. Born in Scottsdale AZ, they are currently based in Austin, TX. Their production company Big Board Films also houses a studio in Atlanta, GA’s Old 4th Ward where they lived and worked for over a decade. Their films have been featured in festival selections and won awards across the country and internationally. They are currently attending film school in Austin with a split residency between ATX and ATL.
I was 17 when I directed Self Portraits in June, 2023. The film is a surrealist rendition of a traditional Hollywood narrative about infidelity. The angst of the protagonist is presented abstractly as his world crumbles around him, and he gradually loses literal control over himself. The film is also a philosophical commentary on the way one forms their sense of identity, and how victimization and a loss of that self can lead to one living a life controlled by others. The use of the Schiele painting as a compositional motif in the film also parallels this meaning, exploring the concept of encountering a flawed image of yourself created by others that leads to the perception of oneself being incongruent with who one actually is, with those outside perceptions of the self becoming the reality of who one actually is if they are unable to fight against it.
P.S. If you’re a festival screener and you just watched the film, please rate and review it on Letterboxd! Thanks!!
