Experiencing Interruptions?

Seiein: Love Your Rage

SYNOPSIS:

In a speculative community, two practitioners shoulder the responsibility of tending to 'Seiein,' a life force capable of both destruction and protection, manifested through seismic activity on the Earth's flesh.

Their practice weaves between the intellectual and the visceral, portraying the nuanced practice of 'tending' anger within a conscious inherited cultural framework. Together, they forge paths into the subconscious realms beneath the surface of daily life - first for themselves and over time for others.

In this shared unconscious realm, a group of women expresses anger's myriad facets and stages through raw and embodied movements. From the shackles of repressed anger to the liberating release, they navigate the transformative power inherent in embracing the complex and diverse shades of anger.

Beyond exploring the transformative potential of embracing anger, the film delves into its complexities. It addresses the delicate balance between employing compassion to release anger and the necessity to channel the same energy in the pursuit of justice. The overarching goal of this film is to serve as a catalyst for inspiring dialogue, introspection, and action concerning our personal and collective relationships with anger - a nuanced and mindful exploration.

ABOUT THE PROCESS:

This short film is the outcome of an unconventional and transformative process that significantly diverges from traditional filmmaking.

The women featured in this project were chosen not based on professional credentials but on the depth of their stories and personal experiences related to anger. The one-week rehearsal process allowed them to tap into their anger and authentically convey it on screen.

Casting also included a call for stories centred around anger, inviting women from all walks of life to contribute their narratives. The voiceovers in the film directly result from this call for stories, making the creation of this film an exceptionally participatory endeavour.

Moreover, the project is unique in its funding model. All contributors worked on a voluntary basis, and the limited budget was solely raised through crowdfunding and anger-release workshops delivered by some of the performing women. This distinct funding approach adds another layer of co-creation to the film, involving a community of women whose experiences and support have been integral to its inception.

From storytelling contributions to financial backing, this film is a result of shared narratives, emotions, and resources—an embodiment of collective empowerment and co-creative expression.

The film's crew is entirely composed of women.

Director
Director Statement

I am led by movement, beauty, and the pursuit of what heightens the senses — those electric moments that open us to awe. My work is an invitation to feel deeply, to return to our aliveness and Nature, and to reconnect with what unites us: our bodies, our emotions, our shared humanity and the natural world.

Shaped by my journey as a dual-heritage immigrant who has lived in 7 countries and engaged with countless cultures, I grew up between social classes, between languages, between worlds. These experiences have instilled in me a fascination with difference and a lifelong pursuit of the threads of unity that lie beneath it. When I ask myself, “Who am I?”, the answer is not fixed, it is layered and shifting, like a constellation made of stories, sensations, and encounters.

I work across disciplines to create holistic, sensory experiences — art that speaks to the eyes, the skin, and the spirit. Film offers the lens ; movement gives form to emotion and expression ; immersive space opens us to presence and connection. I want each of my creations to leave a trace: a subtle but lasting “before and after.”

At the heart of my practice is a belief in creativity as a form of healing and transcendence. In a world driven by urgency and fragmentation, I seek to build spaces of shared presence, where separateness dissolves and we reconnect with something whole and bigger than us. By awakening our capacity to imagine, feel, be embodied and creative, I believe that we can collectively shape a more sustainable, natural and desirable future.
