This is a soul-touching film that possesses a great social meaning.
In this society, violence in high schools happens often. The tragedies of shooting massacres on teenagers have to draw people’s attention. In the 2018 school shooting in Florida, US, 15-year-old Chinese American student Peter Wang was killed while helping his classmates and teachers escape. He became a hero, mourned by others and was reported by many media at the time. But soon most people forgot while the same things still happen somewhere in this world.
As a director who has over twenty years’ experience of documentary and theatre productions and as a mother, whenever I see news like this, I feel a heart-piercing pain. It breaks my heart to see those innocent children die and to see those families lose their kids. Especially when I think of those mothers, I could not help breaking into tears. I have filmed documentaries about homeless orphans, AIDS patients and their villages. The most memorable experience was the one year of following the police, filming and saving women and kids who were trafficked. During that one year and a half, I met many mothers who had lost their children. I knew by heart how hopeless and heartbroken a mother could be when losing their child. Words could not transmit the pain they endured.
Having witnessed these tragedies, I could not bear to see mothers experience the pain of loss anymore, nor could I see more innocent children die in a place that ought to be safe such as schools. Now at least we could do something to make the mother(s) feel slightly better. Therefore, I made this film with my own savings. This film is dedicated to all the young souls who perished in school violence events like this, forgotten by the world as time goes by. What’s more, this film is also a song of love and healing for the mothers and families who have suffered from the loss of loved ones.
I am a Chinese director and I filmed this story in America. This production has also received support from filmmakers and companies from China and France,It has received great support from Chinese Americans in Maryland, Virginia and Washington DC
, and a few American high schools, especially from my friends and companies in the United States and filmmakers in Hollywood.
This film is our gift to the world in this post-pandemic era. Films do not only bring people joy, but they can also ignite courage in those who are suffering from misery to carry on their life. This is a warm embrace for all mothers across the world, sending a supporting hand to the ones who have been or still are lost in the abyss of misery. I wish to send my voice through the film, letting them know that I could see your tears, and so could others; I could hear your heart shatter, and so could the world! You can walk past the shadow of despair, for love still shines in most of the world; you are not alone to bear the pain, we are together. Everything will be fine.
