Searching For Meaning
Searching for Meaning is an honest, and real look at palliative care. Its aim is to dispel taboos, and breakdown mis-perceptions that remain rife in modern society. There is no cheating death and its something we all have to face. As such "Searching For Meaning " aims to raise awareness of palliative care; a subject that many tend to shy from. The documentary addresses the important issues surrounding palliative but not By focusing on dying as so many documentaries do, but instead adopting a unique approach of
exploring how best to live up until the last day of our life.
The only way that true awareness of death can truly be achieved, is through an understanding of the important issues and using them to empower people with the confidence to have their last wishes granted.
Very few people understand what truly constitutes palliative care and what a Good Death' actually means . This is why 'Searching For Meaning' aims to address these burgeoning questions, which begins with the very first step of knowing what to ask and who to ask.
Searching For Meaning, is the first Documentary to take such a broad perspective on the subject of palliative care. This is because the world it going though so many major changes including that of our aging population in 30 years, will for the first time in human history, see those aged over 65's outnumber those under the age of 65. This impending challenge is one that governments remain unprepared for and reluctant to discuss. This unlike any other challenge will in essence require a complete overhaul of how western societies are constructed. Searching For Meaning is for the first time bringing these impending challenges to light in the context thst it sits in. So regardless of gender, race, class wealth, faith or intellectual disposition, it just does not matter as this documentary is for you.
"I really enjoyed the film and felt you had captured the essence of so much that challenges us when supporting people and their families with palliative care. It was great to have diverse input also. I think this film will be great for Dying Matters week and is very thought provoking with an emphasis on living until we die. I loved your background music and thank you for sharing the pictures at the end Jean-Francois…they added a real personal touch which I found very moving".

"Yes we received the film today and I watched it this morning. You very much have the power to make me cry. I loved the tribute at the end. A stunning piece of work which we look forward to showing through Dying Matters Week.

It’s an emotive subject but I think you have handled it with compassion and sensitivity.
I did share a tear or too having lost many members of my own family quite a lot of it resonated for me too so Thank you"

‘Searching for Meaning’ is a thoughtful and informative documentary with a wide scope. Directed by Jean-Francois Rodriguez after the difficult death of his own mother, the film explores end of life care and palliative care provision, funerals, spiritual care, attitudes to death and dying, and much more. Far from being an abstract piece of film-making, at the heart of this film is the story of one family who right now are having to face exactly these discussions around death, dying and loss.
