Contemporary culture is filled with technology, while social media are an integral part of the everyday life. Yet, there are not many films that are based on this important aspect of our society. This was the main reason that we decided to create Scopophilia and tell a story that is mostly happening on computer screens. The presence of the medium itself is integrated through every aspect of the storytelling and dominates the way of displaying every frame in the entire film.
Scopophilia is the first European computer screen movie, a new genre that is slowly emerging. As a matter of fact, there only two other films worldwide that belong to this new genre. Computers and their multitasking screens are part of our lives. New audiences are accustomed to this way of spectatorship in their routine. Our film aims to the conveyance of this “computer screen” dominance to the cinematic universe in terms of a digital mise-en-scène. The passiveness of the spectator that was used to be the rule on cinema is no longer applicable and the contemporary audience demands for more activeness.
This is the fundamental foundation of the narrative of Scopophilia; most of the times we have many windows and tabs open on our computer and do/watch many things in parallel. This “new frame” is what we use for the narrative of our film. We encounter the computer screen as a peculiar character that helps in the progression of the narrative. This filmmaking technique is really interesting and suitable for this film, because it helps the story to be unfolded in front of the eyes of the audience.
The story of the film is based on voyeurism, which is the essence of both social media and cinematic spectatorship. Most of the people enjoy watching films in order to see a story. Even more people prefer to “watch” a real story form their computer screens; the life of other people by following and interacting with them on social media. This is how our main character spends his day, by watching others on his computer screen. Scopophilia is a film that seeks to achieve the identification of the viewer with the main character through the voyeuristic use of the internet. The simulation of this experience is critical to the dissemination of the film's universe. All aspects of this film are aiming to this result.
