Saving Paradise

New draft.

“Romancing the Stone meets Tarzan with a twist of Pirates of the Caribbean.”

The egregious reality of this epic love story is written to shine an awakening light on the sinking of our beautiful island paradises that is drowning the lives of millions of innocent inhabitants due to climate change created by the greed in all of us, resulting in the displacement of generations to come to lands that won't want them.

Logline: Secrets held in children’s island adventure books, based on legends of an ancient cave civilization, rekindle a deep love between childhood friends and the mutual desire to save their Malaysian island paradise from emanate global warming and those who seek to profit from the truth of what still may thrive in the massive caves below.

Synopsis: (sadly based on reality)

On the Malaysian island of Kuali Rhu, rising seas, violent king tides, and collapsing cliffs are slowly erasing paradise. Portland Cooper, once a carefree island kid who invented the “Captain Adventurous” game with his little brother, is now a reluctant boatyard owner. He’s lost his mursenary parents to pirates in the moon vents, his brother to the deadly eddy beneath the falls, and his livelihood and reputation on a past job where he had to shoot a client to survive. He’s done being a hero.

Then Raya Hatukin comes home. Daughter of famed children’s author D.W. Hatukin, she grew up as the “Little Island Princess” of his books. Before she left for boarding school, she and Cooper shared one kiss and a promise - he’d wait for her forever. Now she’s back to find her father missing, the jungle slipping into the sea, and the islanders terrified. Raya insists her father’s stories of a lost Endai civilization and the Naga of the Lake are just that - stories. Cooper, who grew up believing them, isn’t so sure.

Their world is upended by Dr. Yo, a disgraced paleoanthropologist who sees global warming as his chance to prove Endai is real and get rich doing it. With mercenaries and machines, he wants to dig into the island, threatening the jungle, the people, and whatever lies beneath.

Forced together again by danger and their kidnapping, Cooper and Raya escape Dr. Yo's ship to an island filled with pirates, and flee through moon vents. Inlight of the emanate danger that both may not survive, and most likely Cooper, he forces Raya to admit that it's all real but she doesn't know how to get into the caves. Following clues hidden in D.W.’s books, they barely succeed where his parents couldn’t and discover what really happened to them.

In the endgame, Cooper faces Dr. Yo at the roaring eddy beneath the falls—the same one that took his brother. To stop Yo and protect the island, Cooper goes into the eddy with him, fully expecting to die. Instead, he’s swept into the hidden underworld and discovers Endai: a vast, partially collapsed megalithic city, the Naga still alive in its lake, and his brother’s grave lovingly marked by D.W., who has secretly protected the creatures and the caves for years. And that Dr. Yo and two of his men have also survived the eddy.

Cooper defeats Dr. Yo, feeding his men to the Nagas, and finds a way back to Raya, who thinking Cooper has drowned, is about to leave Kula Rue forever out of shame of waiting too long to come back to him, blaming herself for his death.

To bring the adventure full circle, as tourists watch from the cliffs above, a spectacular “ghost king and queen” water ceremony inspired by Endai’s lost culture take place. As it concludes, Cooper and Raya sneak back up inside the cliff to stand barefoot together above the falls to hide that it was them - their childhood promise finally fulfilled. In a world where climate change threatens every shore, they choose each other, choose the island, and quietly take their place as the true guardians of a paradise that’s worth saving twice.

Strengths
A major strength in this script is how it shines when it leans into its adventure energy, especially in the sequences where the tension spikes because Raya denies the legend that everyone else seems desperate to claim. Also, the black pearls create a clean visual motif that feels purposeful instead of decorative, and having Cooper recover them by the end gives the story a satisfying loop that lands emotionally. The ancient mystical story of Endai City comes through well in the moments where the submerged jungle is described via the books, and those beats give the eventual reveal a sense of payoff. Another strength is the romance between Raya and Cooper. It adds warmth without overwhelming the plot, especially in quieter moments where they lean into the playful childlike relationship aspect they developed when they were young. The subplot of searching for D. W. Hatukin works because it anchors the journey and keeps the stakes personal even as the world broadens. The story’s blend of mystery, danger, and emotional urgency sets up a strong core that can support a cinematic adventure.

Prospects
The ancient mystical city beneath sea level and the personal father-daughter arc give this film comps like UNCHARTED and JUNGLE CRUISE. Platforms with global adventure appeal like Netflix, Amazon, and Disney+ could see potential in this story. There’s a good mix of romance, mystery, and spectacle, especially with the CGI and AI-enhanced imagery your notes point toward. Also, the Cooper and Raya dynamic adds a relationship angle that broadens the audience beyond pure action seekers.

More about the Author.

Karl J. Niemiec writes heartfelt love stories across multiple genres and lives with his wife and four children in Carmel, Indiana.

A former Los Angeles resident, Karl relocated to Indiana in 2006 and began teaching at IUPUI as an Adjunct Professor. There, he taught courses based on his bestselling books Write to Be Published and The Inside Pitch-recommended How to Be a Prolific Screenwriter, originally developed at UCLA Extension.

Two documentary projects he and his family produced when they first arrived were:

“This Is Why - Why Do Six Garbage Trucks Go By My House In One Day?” Karl gifted the project to the city of Carmel and Mayor Brainard to help him implement his plan to get all of Carmel on one garbage and recycling service. After it passed, the Niemiecs were given a Carmel Green Environment Award by the Carmel City Council.

And "Special - Give Us A Game", an 8 year study of The Michigan Far Flyers, a Special Needs Hockey team created and coached by Karl’s brother Ben Niemiec and the team's quest to find other teams like them to play. The 60 minute documentary on Amazon inspired "The Indy Twisters" to form right here in Carmel, Indiana.

His teaching journey continued as he directed nine parent acclaimed hit children's musicals, which opened the door to instructing students of all ages at the YMCA, Monon Center, and KjN Studio. The Studio’s signature on-camera technique, The Hero Face, stems from Karl’s private training in ABC’s film library - an experience that saw him move from the mailroom to on-screen roles on General Hospital and Welcome Back, Kotter.

Karl’s passion for performance and storytelling is showcased in his book Audition Monologues That Work, five scenes from which earned IMDb credits. Two of these scenes were selected for film festivals - three of which premiered locally at The Box Film Studio, home to the Indiana Film Network's monthly gatherings.

His expertise in screenwriting and directing led to national opportunities, including a recurring role directing Agent/Manager audition scenes at showcases back in Los Angeles. These biannual events also involved directing and editing actor reels while shooting a day-and-the-life production of the actors and their families from across the country.

Today, Karl continues to write and adapt his screenplays into stage plays, novels, audiobooks, and even game boards to broaden his projects' marketability using the same simple five reformatting techniques that spawned The Game of Halloween inside How to Be a Prolific Screenwriter.
