Saved By Jane

An award-winning, debut short film from filmmaker Damian Sciberras, featuring Jane Baker, founder of Starfield Farm Animal Sanctuary.

This beautifully moving short story shares an insight into Jane’s commitment, compassion and love for rescuing animals that most of our society considers food.

Showing them the same respect as our companion animals, Jane has created a forever home for over one-hundred and thirty farm animals.

Director Biography - Damian Sciberras

I am an ethical filmmaker and videographer based in Devon, UK.

Over the last four years, I have been working commercially for various SME's nationwide and I am currently a video editor for Vegan Activist, Ed Winters [Earthling Ed].

In 2021 I worked as Associate Producer on feature documentary 'Circumnavigate', the story of The Long Paddle, with filmmaker Will Reddaway and four times SUP world record holder Brendon Prince. As well as shooting additional footage for several scenes, I assisted in the post production of the film too.

In 2022, I created my debut short film 'Saved By Jane', a moving portrayal of one woman's compassion to create a forever home for over 130 rescued farm animals! This purely self-funded solo project took me on an emotional journey of discovery and realisation into the truth about these amazing creatures.

During the same year, again I collaborated with filmmaker Will Reddaway to create 'Held by the Water', a short film depicting one woman's journey as she finds solace in her relationship with the ocean.

I currently have my third short film in pre-production about an 85 year old vegan ultra marathon runner and am always looking for captivating stories to tell. I love to give a voice to those without one and a platform to be heard!

Director Statement

After being vegan for the past four years, in May 2021 I started volunteering at Starfield Farm Animal Sanctuary. I got to know the owner and her animals very well, so I decided to create my first short film 'Saved By Jane'.

My initial motivation for the film was to prove to myself that I could fulfil this process, but this quickly turned into a desire to communicate what I had learned from Jane and her animals.

I was inspired by her kindness and compassion for these creatures that most of our population call food. As I got to know the animals better, I realised that the only difference between them and our domesticated pets was the way society views them and felt compelled to show them for who they really are!

Using Jane's voice, my aim was to create an emotional connection with the viewer. Providing an insight into the individualism, intelligence and will for life these incredible sentient beings have!
