  • I’m deeply grateful to the Santa Monica Film Festival for taking a chance on a completely no‑budget, first‑time filmmaker like me. Turmoil was made with nothing but heart, handheld cameras, and a cast of real veterans, nurses, doctors, and priests who had never acted before. It’s the kind of film that usually gets overlooked, but Santa Monica didn’t overlook it. They watched it. They really watched it.

What stood out most was how seriously the festival treats every submission. You can feel that the programmers actually sit with the films, no matter how big or small. For an outsider filmmaker, that kind of respect means everything.

Being selected for the XOLO.TV Audience Choice program was already an honor, but winning the Audience Choice Award was something I never expected. It happened because the festival gave Turmoil a platform, believed in it, and let it reach people who connected with its raw honesty.

Santa Monica Film Festival is the rare kind of festival that sees the heart behind a film, not just the budget. I’ll always be grateful for the way they opened their doors to a noob filmmaker and helped this little film find its audience.

  • Hands down the best festival I’ve attended. This wasn’t a festival where your work gets sandwiched in the middle of 150 other shorts on a Tuesday afternoon, never meeting any of the organizers, only feeling a part of the festival because of the lanyard you were given. The staff, organizers, and other filmmakers were all amazing and the filmmaker reception and award ceremony were a blast! Our film ended up winning Best Live Action Short which I’m still reeling about! If you’re thinking about entering this festival, don’t hesitate.

We had our LA Premiere of our documentary The American Trail at the SMFF. David and the team put together a really great festival at the DGA Theater. Could not have asked for a better experience. Thank you!

We love this festival. It was top notch. We screened at the Directors Guild of America and the picture and sound quality does not get better than that. The house was packed. The best part is we had industry folks in the audience. They also had a couple of nice mixers and an award ceremony that evening. This year they moved the event to one day as the fires of LA affected their normal venues. If you have a short or feature, I would for sure submit to the Santa Monica Film Festival. And I hope to be back soon with my next feature. David Katz is a charmer.

  • As someone that was a 'finalist', got a couple generic email blasts regarding xolo.tv. They encourage you send an intro/outro for your work so I sent both. Guess they didn't like my outro and left that out without telling me. If they wanted one or the other, it wasn't made clear enough. Would have preferred playing at the DGA of course, but my way of life isn't affected since I'm not advertising them on my socials. They do offer to comp two tickets but the wording makes it come off like it didn't matter if I was there or not. To that end it would've been weird to be there as a filmmaker and not have anything playing in person lol

Edit: I got my first email that wasn't a group blast almost immediately after creating this review. The contents asked me to delete the review in exchange for refunds on my submission fees. The gesture was nice enough to score hospitality higher but I'm keeping the review here as it might help someone out here that might have a similar experience in the future
