Santa Fe & Esmeralda - Crossroads

Logline
Santa Fe & Esmeralda is a coming-of-age story about two young artists from opposite sides of the world—a Dutch woman and the gay son of a prominent Argentine family—whose instant, language-defying friendship deepens into an act of profound caregiving during the AIDS epidemic, revealing the power of chosen family, memory, and love in the face of silence, stigma, and loss.

Project Description
Some friendships begin with conversation; others begin with recognition. Santa Fe & Esmeralda tells the story of two young artists—Kita, from the Netherlands, and Lorenzo, from Argentina—who recognize something essential in each other before they can even speak the same language.

They meet in Buenos Aires in the late 1980s, at a moment when Argentina had only recently returned to democracy after years of dictatorship. Lorenzo is the gay son of a prominent Argentine family closely connected to the country’s political and social elite. Kita arrives from the Netherlands, where she has grown up in a liberal society where democracy and personal freedoms feel almost invisible in their normalcy. Encountering Argentina’s recent history—and Lorenzo’s family world—forces her to see how fragile those freedoms can be.

Despite coming from opposite sides of the world, Kita and Lorenzo quickly discover that they share an artistic sensibility and an instinctive emotional language expressed through music, literature, and curiosity about life. Their friendship unfolds with the intensity of a love story, though not a romantic one. Together they explore Argentina’s vibrant cultural landscape and the exhilaration of youth in a country rediscovering its creative voice.

Woven throughout the story is music—the constant in Kita’s life and the thread that connects memory, place, and emotion. Song lyrics, poetry, and literature become part of the language that Kita and Lorenzo share. One of Lorenzo’s favorite books, The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, becomes a touchstone for their friendship, reflecting their sense of wonder, imagination, and vulnerability. These shared cultural references—songs, stories, fragments of poetry—form an emotional archive that carries their relationship forward. Music also shapes the narrative voice of the project itself; Kita’s artistic life and her later career were deeply intertwined with Argentine music, and its rhythms and poetry inform the way this story is told, allowing memory to move associatively between moments of joy, travel, illness, and reflection.

Yet Lorenzo’s life is also shaped by powerful and cruel forces within his own family. His father is an influential political figure, and his mother wields authority through a combination of social status, public visibility, and devout Catholic belief. When Lorenzo’s sexuality and later his illness with AIDS conflict with her expectations, she reacts with rejection—going so far as to throw him into the street while he is confined to a wheelchair. Religious doctrine, fear of scandal, and the pressures of public life converge to create an environment in which love is impossible to express, leaving Lorenzo abandoned and alone. It is in this void that Kita steps forward, becoming his caregiver and the only person to offer the tenderness and devotion his own family could not.

For Kita, this family dynamic is both foreign and strangely familiar. Lorenzo’s household mirrors the emotional structure of her own father’s family, revealing patterns of silence and unresolved sorrow that transcend geography. As the story unfolds, she begins to understand the concept of referred grief—how unspoken loss and suppressed emotions can echo across generations.

When Lorenzo becomes ill, their youthful adventures transform into an intimate portrait of caregiving. Still very young herself, Kita navigates stigma, fear, and the emotional complexity of loving someone whose life is threatened by illness. She confronts the limits of family acceptance, the weight of cultural shame, and the quiet courage required to remain present when others cannot.

At its heart, Santa Fe & Esmeralda is a coming-of-age story shaped by friendship, art, and devotion. After Lorenzo’s death, Kita preserves their bond through storytelling, transforming grief into memory. Through music, literature, and narrative, she keeps alive the creative and emotional world they once shared.

Why This Story Matters Now
As HIV/AIDS reenters public discussion through renewed awareness and reflection on the epidemic’s cultural legacy, many younger generations are encountering this history without the lived memory of its most devastating years. Santa Fe & Esmeralda contributes to this cultural memory by focusing on the intimate human stories that unfolded behind the broader narrative of the epidemic.

The project explores themes that remain deeply relevant today: caregiving, the influence of religion and social expectations on family life, and the ways silence and stigma shape how people respond to illness and identity. By telling this story through the lens of friendship, art, and shared cultural expression, the project offers audiences a deeply personal way to engage with this history.

Why Audiences Will Connect
Audiences are drawn to stories that reveal the emotional landscapes hidden within friendships and families. The bond between Kita and Lorenzo—two artists who recognize each other across language, culture, and circumstance—offers a rare narrative about the transformative power of friendship.

Music, literature, and storytelling provide audiences with entry points into the emotional world of the characters, allowing the story to resonate not only as a historical account but as a poetic meditation on memory, love, and loss.

Ultimately, Santa Fe & Esmeralda invites audiences to reflect on the friendships that shape our lives, the families that influence who we become, and the quiet acts of care that allow love to endure beyond loss.

Director Statement

"Santa Fe & Esmeralda," a love story about two artists from opposite sides of the world, was born after completing my latest album "Nostalgia."

As an artist and world traveler, different locations evoke different associations for me. When I pondered which place I associated with nostalgia, I was transported straight back to Argentina, a country I once called home.

Set against the vibrant art scene of Buenos Aires in the 1980s and 90s, amidst Argentina’s transition to democracy, "Santa Fe & Esmeralda"—where friendship and love intersect—was conceived. The narrative takes an unexpected turn when one of the friends contracts AIDS, and the protagonist becomes both caregiver and advocate, defying social stigmas. Their journey is a testament to the resilience of human connections and the transformative power of love.

When her book "Santa Fe & Esmeralda" and album "Nostalgia" met, they felt like they belonged together. However, they sought visuals to complement their narratives, leading to "Santa Fe & Esmeralda’s" first chapter, "CrossRoads," being transformed into a film. This film is the first in a series of vignettes that capture the atmosphere of my music and book, bringing to life the rich tapestry of emotions and experiences that define them.

"Santa Fe & Esmeralda - Crossroads" marks Christel's directorial debut, a project deeply personal and reflective of her artistic journey. It is an homage to a time and place that profoundly shaped her, and a celebration of the enduring bonds we form. She invites you to join her on this visual and auditory exploration, as we delve into a world where past and present converge, and where every moment is imbued with the essence of nostalgia.
