Imagination has always been Maychaelson’s escape. Honing his style in earlier short films and screaming on family, social, and political matters beneath reality-bending stories, Maychaelson’s recent body of work focuses on simple interpersonal relationships set against unique circumstances. For example, two sisters navigate their parents’ divorce in THE ROOTLESS BLOOM (2023), which premiered at Busan International Film Festival. In SAMMI, WHO CAN DETACH HIS BODY PARTS (2024), Rein focuses on a mother’s relationship with her son. This short premiered at Berlinale and went on to win the Silver Dragon Award at Krakow Film Festival, the Jury Award at Concorto Film Festival, and an honorable mention at NYAFF. The film has also been selected by and screened at Raindance, Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, SXSW London, Leiden, and more. With two other short films currently in post-production, Maychaelson continues to develop his first feature about a man who wishes to be unborn.
