Saint Joseph

When Joseph Albright died on May 5, 2022, at age 93, he was in in his 58th year as a reporter and columnist for Hudson County’s “Jersey Journal,” and was the longest-serving statehouse reporter in America. Because Albright was usually a week ahead
filing his work, his final column appeared in print and on line the day he died.
A deeply religious Catholic, “Jersey Joe” was known for his daily habit of feeding and blessing animals on or near the grounds of the New Jersey Statehouse prompting Albright’s media colleagues to refer to him as “the Saint Frances of Assisi of the statehouse.” Most people who live or work near downtown Trenton and passed by him each day as he moved slowly with his walker to and from the bus stop and along West State Street , may have assumed he is either homeless or mentally ill, or both. They could have had no idea that Albright was a working journalist, possessing a memory that allowed him recount endless behind the scenes stories, dates, and landmark legislative battles that left his state house journalist brethren in awe.

Director Biography - Tim Stollery

As an Emmy-award winning writer/producer/videographer/editor with a 30-year track record who is intimately familiar with the key players in New Jersey politics, media, and business, I spent 28 years at NJN, three years at NJTV and have been freelancing for Rutgers University, NBA, METV, News12, CivicStory, among many others since 2016.
Some top projects include:
“Recycling” This Emmy-winning three-part news series aired on New Jersey Nightly News in 1988, before recycling was mandatory statewide and long before recycling of post-consumer waste became a key component of combating global climate change.
“Plastic Packaging: Here Today, Here Tomorrow” Another Emmy-winning three-part series from 1989, which explored the good and bad in using plastics for packaging food and other consumer items.
“The Air We Breathe” This 1990 public affairs special was an Emmy finalist which explored amendments in 1990 to The Federal Clean Air Act and how the amendments would be implemented and received in New Jersey, the most densely-populated state in America.

This project has truly been a labor of love since I began shooting in May, 2018. It was such an amazing privilege to get to know Joe and all of his Trenton friends and to follow him on his daily rounds of blessing and feeding "his angels" as he called them.
'Two-legged angels" the birds and pigeons, and "four-legged angels" the squirrels and cats.
His devotion to one stray cat in particular, "Trusty," was just unbelievable. If Trusty was not around when Joe came downtown to visit, he would be frantic. His friends in the neighborhood always kept an eye on Trusty and made sure she was safe.
My only regret is that I did not complete this project before Joe left us.
