Shea Allen is an Atlanta based filmmaker and storyteller who got her start as a video journalist and investigative TV news reporter. “I didn’t get the luxury of controlling the environment as a run and gun reporter, so I learned how to embrace a raw aesthetic and make the elements work for me.”
Shea says she combines grit, enthusiasm and resourcefulness with her “down the rabbit hole” love of all things odd, loud and vibrant.
“I grew up in musical theater so this idea of just painting an extra layer of saturation and exaggeration on my subjects - I want you to feel all Willy Wonka and Scissorhands - but still portray the human condition as authentically and vulnerably as possible. I love the ultra close up shots that leave the audience trying to get their bearings.”
Shea runs a boutique video content production company, Rage and Crow Productions and lends her hand to artist advocacy and women’s empowerment efforts whenever possible. Her 2017 short film, The Only Thing Certain, was an official selection at more than two dozen festivals internationally and won “Best Director”, “Best Screenplay” and “Best Editing” laurels. Shea was also awarded a Women in Film Spotlight award at the Nevada Women’s Film Festival and “Best Dramatic Short” at the Atlanta Underground Film Festival. Shea is currently wrapping post production on her first feature length documentary, Anything for a Fix, and hopes the film will begin to break down the barriers of stigma surrounding opioid overdose and substance addiction.
Safe Space was incredible to direct because I already had a really close relationship with the actors so they weren’t surprised or uncomfortable with the seemingly bizarre asks and having a lens just inches from their face. It was silly and it gave me a comedic outlet to process through my own relationship fails.
