I started out working in a small independent film production and distribution company, in Soho - London, UK, between 2003-9 where I taught myself how to make films - completing a few music videos, experimental short films, and went on to make short documentaries, including one - "there's no way back" (2009), on lesbian sub-cultures in London, and exploring the importance women only spaces. I was developing a strong passion and drive to work more on women's issues and human rights.
I took a huge leap, re-trained and 12-year career change - where I have been working on addressing violence against women and girls and working on women's rights in humanitarian emergencies, conflict zones, and disasters around the work in the Middle East; West, Central and Eastern Africa; Asia and Eastern Europe.
The love of filmmaking never left me though, and over the last 3 years, I have been coming back to it - exploring ways to combine film and my focus on women rights and ending violence to telling stories with and about women, and our lived experiences, realities, struggles, visions, triumphs, and dreams.
I completed my first short fiction narrative film in 2022, "sabrina". I made this, how I want to continue to tell women's stories – collaboratively with a group of 8 women whose story this was about. From workshopping the story and script, selecting actors, to production and being on-set, and to all post-production elements, this group of women were involved and central to the whole process. The authenticity of the story as a whole was essential. Upon watching the final version of "sabrina" this group of women said to me - "this is the first time we feel, and are, seen".
Current works in progress include: documentary film with women’s rights defenders from eastern Europe (2019 – ongoing); an animation exploring women’s battle with depression and addition driven by past abuse (2021– ongoing).
I also have credits as Director of Photography and 1st and 2nd AC roles on a variety of short fiction films from 2021 - ongoing.
