SISU

La abuela y el abuelo han vivido toda sus vidas rodeados por la naturaleza, compartiendo su ritmo. El bosque ha sido testigo tanto de momentos agrios y de dolor así como de felicidad y disfrute y tiene una memoria propia. En un tropezado lanzamiento de fuegos artificiales de año nuevo, el abuelo nos enseña el verdadero significado de "Sisu" (resiliencia y perseverancia).

Grandpa and grandma have lived their lives embraced by nature, sharing its rhythms. The Forest has witnessed both pain and bitterness as much as joy and tenderness, and it has a memory of its own. Within a frame story, grandpa shows during a troubled New Year's Eve's fireworks what "SISU" (resilience and endurance) is.

Aleksi Herrera Kivinen (Ciudad de México, 1993) es un cineasta mexicano/finlandés graduado de CENTRO en la Ciudad de México en el 2018. Sus cortometrajes han sido exhibidos en el FICQ 2018 (Festival Internacional de Cine de Quito) , en la MUCEM 2019 (Muestra de Cine Escandinavo en México) y en el CIMOV (Cine y Movilidad). En 2019 trabajó como data manager en el largometraje del director argentino Manuel Abramovich “Pornomelancolía”. En 2021 dirigió la fotografía de “Boli derretido”, ópera prima del director yucateco Augusto Castillo, actualmente en postproducción y fue director de fotografía de la serie de cortometrajes documentales “Yo también soy Mexicano”. En 2022 dirigió el detrás de cámaras de “The Dead Don't Hurt”, largometraje del actor y director Viggo Mortensen. Actualmente tiene tres cortometrajes recién terminados (Sisu, Ser Como el Agua que Fluye y Probóscide) y en Junio de 2023 realizó el pitch de su primera película “Los Vaqueros del Kalevala” en el FICG (Festival Internacional de Cine de Guadalajara) y ganó el premio del primer lugar y un premio de Lemon Films.

Aleksi Herrera Kivinen (Mexico City, 1993) is a Mexican/Finnish filmmaker who graduated from Centro de Diseño, Cine y Televisión film school in 2018. His Short films have been shown in FICQ 2018 (Festival Internacional de Cine de Quito), in the MUCEM 2019 (Muestra de Cine Escandinavo en México) and in the CIMOV 2018 (Cine y Movilidad) in Mexico City. In 2019, he worked as data manager in “Pornomelancolía”, the film of the Argentinian director Manuel Abramovich. In 2021 he was de cinematographer of “Boli derretido” the first film of the director Augusto Castillo and also of the documentary series “Yo También soy Mexicano”. In 2022 he was on charge of the behind the scenes of Viggo Mortensen's latest film "The Dead Don't Hurt". In 2023 he just finished three short films (Sisu, To Be Like Flowing water and Proboscis) and in June he pitched his first film "The Kalevala Cowboys" in the FICG (Festival Internacional de Cine de Guadalajara) and won a prize from the studio "Lemon Films".

Desde que era un niño he ido a visitar a mis abuelos a Kuhmo, Finlandia. Su vida en medio del bosque siempre me ha fascinado, al ser una persona que toda su vida ha vivido en la gigantesca Ciudad de México.

En mis últimas visitas a mis abuelos, la relación comenzó a cambiar, comencé a sentir la necesidad de conocerlos lo más que me fuera posible, me di la tarea de escucharlos más yo a ellos a que ellos me escucharan a mi.

Este es un cortometraje que hice con mi cámara en los días de navidad y de año nuevo, es en estos días donde conocemos el significado de la palabra finlandesa "sisu", que no tiene una traducción exacta a otro idioma, pero que básicamente significa "perseverancia" y "coraje".

Para mi Sisu es una carta de amor a mis abuelos y a la tierra en la que ellos habitan.

Since I was a child I've visited my grandparents in Kuhmo, Finland. Their life in the middle of the forest has always fascinated me - someone that has always lived in one of the most crowded cities in the world, Mexico City.

On my last journeys to Finland, my relationship with my grandparents started changing. I began to feel an urge to get to know them as much as possible. I found myself keenly listening to them much more than before, rather than having them listen to me.

This is a short film shot with my camera between Christmas and the New Year’s Eve on which we get to know the true meaning of "Sisu", a word that doesn't have a precise translation to any other language but that basically means "perseverance and courage".

For me, this work is a love letter to Mummo, Ukki and to the land that they live on.
