Marina lives surrounded by magic, death and mysterious disappearances. She flees and takes refuge in a brothel, where she is the main star singing opera.
On holy Week arrival little by little the spirits that chase her reappear and she discovers the curse that drags for being “Sirena”.

Director Biography - MIGUEL ANGEL CONTRERAS PELAYO

Miguen Angel Contresa Pelayo, estudio en el CAAV Guadalajara Jalisco; para luego tomar un curso de certificación como Film Maker en Lights Films School N.Y end LA. Posteriormente curso especialízante en escritura de Guion y dirección de Actores en La EICTV, Cuba. Director y Guionista de tres cortometrajes varías puestas en escena.

Director´s statement
While thinking on the title, you must get away from the pure concept of these mythological creatures.
For a long time, this word has been circling around my head. I did not imagine, nor did I wanted to tell a story of a woman with a fish tale. Like Mario Benedetti’s poems says, “Don’t tell me love with Love”.
It was inventing a universe, creating it. Making improbable something “normal”. Me being from Latin America and a fervent reader of the Latin America “boom” authors. Magic Realism was the ideal place for these characters to live and die, and as a Mexican, I assume death like a different state of existence.
This is a story close is like a town’s legend, where local inventiveness, the implausible, the fantastic and the sinister converge. Sirena was a collective project, where all the people involved contributed with their talent. With a tight budget, we still ventured to make cinema, and in a country where it is not easy to carry out a cinematographic project. In this my first film, I have tried to capture some of my influences, staring from surrealism, Fellini’s cinema, Luis Buñuel, the grotesque and the theatricality.
Biography
Miguel Angel Contreras Pelayo
Studied at the CAAV Audiovisual Media Center in the city of Guadalajara, Jalisco. then took a certification course at Light Films School New York. He went on to take a specializing course in directing of actors and script writing in EICTV of San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba.
Writer, screenwriter, producer and director, Miguel Angel has made several productions for theater and has directed three short films and a feature film titled ‘Sirena’
