Director Statement

For quite some time I had been wanting to write a screenplay about what happens when we fall madly in love with someone. What does that do to us psychologically? There are so many confusing things about falling in love, the biggest one being that it clouds our judgement, and make us blind to obvious signs.

It took over a decade before I finally had a story that could be turned into a screenplay. It was loosely based on when I was a young adult and had a huge crush on someone who didn't feel the same about me. It was an incredibly confusing and gut-wrenching time for me, and I decided right there and then that I needed to write a screenplay in order to understand it on a deeper level. However, it was too soon to do it in 2013, so I put it on hold and didn't come back to it until the early spring of 2024.

It was important to me that the movie, while being funny and entertaining, would have this raw and unflinching honesty about it. I didn't want to sugarcoat anything about the main character, Oscar - he is very selfish, messy and backstabbing, but also kind, vulnerable and, ultimately, human.

"See me" is meant to show the euphoric highs and devastating lows of falling in love, and I wanted to do so with both tenderness, beauty and honesty.

Just like with "Then & Now", I wanted to take on as many roles as possible in addition to writing, producing and directing, in order to keep the crew as small as possible - so once again I acted as my own cinematographer, editor and, for the first time, color grader.

The making of "See me", in all of its stages, has been one of the most challenging, exhausting and emotionally draining experiences of my life so far. However, I am incredibly proud of the movie. The cast, most of them professionals, made the story and the characters come to life - they are the reason for "See me" becoming what it is. Without them, there is no movie.
