Born and raised in Singapore, Amanda Liaw gained a background in theatre acting before pursuing an IB diploma in film and, subsequently, a B.A. in Cinema and Media Studies from the University of Southern California. She is currently working in the nonprofit sector in Washington, DC, and enjoys pole dancing and cooking in her spare time.
The film Room 048 was first inspired by a graphic novel I read that explores the use of place over time. The minutiae of daily life and the variety of human experience are two themes that I've always been interested in examining. Room 048 is, in many ways, a culmination of my thoughts on these themes in relation to how we claim a space and how we regard the history of spaces.
The individual stories of Room 048 were each inspired by personal anxieties about being forgotten, just as they were reflections of other stories I've heard. I wrote the poem tying this film together in an attempt to answer our collective fears of being misunderstood, underwhelmed, and left behind. It is my hope that watching this film will inspire us to listen to each other and consider history with a sense of self-awareness. We, too, will soon be part of it, dreaming that someone else has heard our story.
