Robin in the Hood

In a part of Dublin known as the Liberties - which is also where the Vikings settled 1100 years ago - there is a small tribe of rebel horse owners. And one day a travelling street musician accidentally crashes her van into the wall of one of their urban horse yards – and out comes a horse and a few boys. One of them brings her for a spin with a horse and two-wheeler, and from that day on she’s hooked…

«Robin in the Hood» combines documentary, fiction and musical, to create a modern version of the old ballad of Robin Hood. This time Robin is an urban horse owner from Dublin, and Marian is a traveling busker. Both feel trapped by an unfair and oppressive economic system, but with the help of Dublin´s inner city horse tribe they try to break out and create a new life for themselves.

Director Biography - Kristin Vollset

Kristin Vollset is an award-winning filmmaker, musician and producer from Norway. She makes films that fuse documentary, fiction and musical in a groundbreaking way.

Vollset has spent a large part of her life travelling. She started making music around the year 2000, jamming on the streets in France. In 2001 she moved to London where she attended the London Film School, and also composed vocal- and noisebased soundscapes with a small group of musicians. In 2003 she travelled to Mexico, where she started working as a street musician. She also worked as a fisher in the Mexican lagoon of Temascal.

In 2004-2005 Vollset attended the Grieg Academy in Bergen, where she studied composition. She has also worked as a school assistant, painter, scaffolder, bricklayer, gardener, and on a farm making cheese and sausages. From 2006 to 2010 she was in the band Bergen Beach Band, and they toured extensively in Norway, Sweden and Ireland.

From 2011 to 2014 she lived in Ireland, which she describes as her soul´s true home. She ended up buying her own horse and becoming part of the urban horse community in The Liberties, in Dublin.

Vollset recently released "Robin in the Hood", a 30 minute musical based on her experiences with this urban horse tribe. The film won the Jury Award for Best Norwegian Short Film at its national premiere at the Bergen International Film Festival in Norway, in October 2025. And it recently had its national Irish premiere at the Dublin International Film Festival, on March 1st 2026. The film also won the Jury Award for Best Film at Tønsberg Film Festival in Norway on March 3rd. Vollset is eagerly awaiting the film's international premiere.

Vollset previously gained widespread acclaim for her 2016 short musical documentary, "No Plan" (https://youtu.be/19A53SyAUak?si=WnRHeDo__pFS1eoE), which portrays a group of teenage boys from the same horse community. The film was screened in festivals worldwide, and won the award for Best Short Documentary at the Irish Film Institute´s Documentary Festival in Dublin, in 2017.

In 2020 Vollset released another song and short musical documentary from inner-city Dublin, "They can´t stop you". It won the award for Best Music Video at the Bergen International Film Festival, in 2020.

Vollset is now working on her upcoming feature documentary, "Horses & Cars".

Director Statement

My name is Kristin Vollset, and I´m a filmmaker and musician from Norway, with a unique style and a strong commitment to social justice. Through my work I have created a new form of storytelling, interweaving documentary, fiction and music in unexpected ways, and combining both social and magical realism. I have previously directed the two award-winning short films, "No Plan" (2016) and "They can´t stop you" (2020) - both centred around the urban horse culture in Dublin, Ireland.

For the last few years I´ve been working on my latest short film, the 30-minute musical, "Robin in the Hood". It tells the story of a horse owner and dealer from inner-city Dublin, and how his encounter with a travelling street musician changes both their lives. The film is a modern retelling of the old ballad of Robin Hood, and it aims to humanise people who choose crime as a way to improve their standard of living - and to see their actions in the context of economic inequality.

The film also pushes boundaries creatively, and a unique feature of the film is how the entire narrative is sung by a travelling street musician, while she simultaneously acts as one of the protagonists in the story.

"Robin in the Hood" is inspired by real events related to the urban horse community in The Liberties, in Dublin. This unique horse culture dates back to the opening of the Guinness factory in 1759, and for over 200 years horses were used in the transportation of Dublin´s trademark brew. This spurred a deep bond between workers and horses in the area, a bond that lives on to this day. It is not uncommon to see boys riding horses around the streets of the Liberties, while older men drive tourists to and from the city centre in their horse-drawn carriages. Also, the many horse yards in the Liberties serve as an important arena for socialising, for both kids and adults.

Unfortunately The Liberties also faces challenges, and “Robin in the Hood” sheds a light on sensitive issues such as crime and violence, while at the same time demonstrating the complexity of these issues and how they can be linked to economic inequality. “Robin in the Hood” is at the same time a depiction of a working class community facing significant adversity, a homage to a historic urban horse culture, and also a modern fairy tale, building on elements from the oldest ballads about Robin Hood.

Another important aspect is how the film engages people from an inner-city community. The film shines a light on their culture, on their heritage, and on their challenges, and that´s a profound thing - not just from an artistic point of view, but also socially. The people of the Liberties in Dublin are delighted that a film has been made about their neighborhood, and that they have gotten the chance to be involved both in front and behind the camera. With the exception of two actors, all characters and extras are played by real members of this inner-city horse tribe.

To me filmmaking is a calling, and I hope to reflect real life back to people with all its beauty, hardship and magic. I truly hope my films can inspire people to recognise their own power and to see the value of life even when it is hard to bear.
