Rickshaw Girl
Daring and determined, teenage girl Naima longs to earn money for her poor Bangladeshi family, but her unrivaled artistic talent is of little use. When her father grows gravely ill, Naima feels she has no choice but to leave her small village for the bright lights of Dhaka. In the big city, Naima finds the same economic, societal, and gender pressures faced by most young girls in Bangladesh. She cleverly disguises herself as a boy and takes the difficult job of a rickshaw puller. When her gender is revealed and her livelihood vanishes, Naima finds an unconventional solution to her problems. Based on the acclaimed novel by Mitali Perkins.

Bangladesh is a rapidly changing society in which women and girls are striving to make economic and personal gains.
It is a bumpy road with as many victories as setbacks. While Bangladesh may be one of the poorest countries in the world,
it is rich in resiliency and hope and the birthplace of the microcredit revolution.
There’s much to be done. Age-old social, cultural, and religious traditions prevent women from earning their rightful place in education, in business and in the home. The producers of Rickshaw Girl hope this inspiring story of a young girl overcoming all odds with persistence and ingenuity will help speed the changes well underway in the beautiful and beguiling land that is Bangladesh.
