Resonance

In the wake of Grace’s death, husband Damian seeks to keep her memory alive and find atonement for his past sins by planning a memorial at their family’s favourite beach - a heaven away from the hell they live in. But for Damien this will only be fulfilled if
his estranged son Levi joins. But he refuses, scarred by his alcoholic father’s absence during his mothers sickness, which forced him to drop out of school to nurse her on her deathbed.

When Levi’s girlfriend Sophie - his final lifeline and escape mechanism - withdraws from their relationship, Levi is left with nothing but his unprocessed anger and resentment for his father. But will this emotional bankruptcy lead them both closer together or drive the chasm further apart, past the point of return?

The main inspiration behind Resonance was born out of personal experiences. Raised on the sunny shores of Australia, not all was sunshine, beers at the beach and surfing. After the death of my own mother, I witnessed my father struggling with this new reality, and I did not always understand his decisions and actions. While we did not set out to retell or include exact details of my past, these experiences certainly inspired the characters and places of Resonance. As far as I can remember, the ocean has not only been a refuge and place of welcomed solitude for me, but also a symbol of renewal and hope for a better, happier life.

Years later, I found myself as an adult living in London, confined to a housing estate, surrounded by concrete, noise and grey skies, far from the freedom and serenity of the sun and surf I was accustomed to. It was here that I lived amongst families with children who had never seen the ocean, let alone left the city. At the same time I looked at my own son and the underlying question ‘How did we think our parents had life figured out when we were kids?’

This formed the catalyst for writing a short film that helped me process some of these thoughts; The realisation that our parents are also just human beings with their own struggles and our desire to escape entrapment and long for freedom - and the result of this is Resonance. The following quote by Oscar Wild turned into an anchor of our story we kept circling around:

“Children begin by loving their parents; as they grow older they judge them; sometimes they forgive them.”

Dealing with our own and our parents shortcomings, our desire for freedom, addiction and suffering, purpose and ultimately forgiveness and restoration are the core themes within the film. These are hard hitting issues which plague so many families in society today. The journey with this film has been exciting and exhausting yet rewarding and our great hope is that Resonance will speak to people’s hearts and give them new courage and hope.
