Experiencing Interruptions?

Répétition

When a young pianist sneaks into a rehearsal studio in an effort to avoid the loud and chaotic world outside, he is seeking not only to rehearse, but to escape.

However, when the outside world comes crashing in moments later in the form of a beautiful young dancer, it's not only his rehearsal that's disrupted, but also the rest of his life.

Transfixed by her, they find themselves in a confusing moment of tension, leaving him faced with a whole new chaos he's never experienced before and her with feelings she can't quite process.

As he scrambles for something to say, his nerves fail him. Embarrassed, she exits almost immediately, leaving the poor musician with nothing but his regret, his frustrations and his music. It's that music that keeps the connection alive, and what follows is a recognition of the daily highs and lows of human interaction, the imbalance of uncertainty, the promise of surprise.

Director Statement

The essence of ‘Répétition’ is about digging deep into the human subconscious to shine a light on what it is that has the power to restrict us, or hold us back from our innate desires, and what it is that releases us to be the people we want to be.

It is about the complexity of emotions, and what can be possible when we release ourselves from the burden of expectation. It is about finding a way of connecting today.

The film presents two characters; a pianist and a dancer who don't know one another and want to use the same rehearsal room. A fairly innocuous setting for a chance encounter. However, the situation isn't what it seems. It becomes awkward and hesitant. There is an undeniable attraction between the two characters as they babble some attempt at a normal conversation, neither quite allowing themselves to break from convention and acknowledge what they are experiencing. And so they carry on their day attempting to forget that connection.
The fact that neither can quite forget that connection is what carries us through the film, and we see what it is that REALLY connects these two characters above all else: the unspoken form of their artistic expression.

This unspoken relationship is created by the answer of her body to his music.

Without being able to see one another, without committing to touch, the ability to kiss, to embrace, we witness a relationship build and develop, and suddenly it becomes the perfect environment for these two shy, awkward people to live out that attraction that was so hard to acknowledge in person at the beginning of the film.

It is about sharing something vulnerable, intense and very human with the audience.
