THANK YOU DAD
During our morning coffee, visiting with my 94 year-old aita (father) as always, I ask him about his early life stories in his Euskadi, of Northern Spain, when he was a young boy just prior to the Spanish Civil War, and the bombing of Gernika. I thought I had heard them all, but this time his recollection was particularly fresh, thoughtful and revelatory as if he too was learning aspects about himself. The pain, sorrow, courage, joy, and enormous love flowed through him.
In Spanish with English subtitles.

Begonya Plaza-Rosenbluth is an accomplished New York theatre, television, and Hollywood film actress. She is a produced playwright, a published poet, and bilingual filmmaker. Begonya was born in Colombia, of Basque descent, therefore intimately and creatively molded by an intrinsic bond between diverse cultures and languages.
Sharing my father's earliest memories of his life story is sharing the story of a history and culture in northern Spain, Euskadi, the Basque Country, during the Spanish Civil War, and World War II. It is a universal story of broken family devastation, struggles, endurances, and life lessons that elevate the spirit towards willful hope. Finding my aita's (dad's) story and presence riveting I was inspired to create this visual documentation.
Without planning or preparation, my aita (dad) and I had our morning coffee, the morning prior to attending the 88th anniversary of the bombing of Gernika, and here he responds so candidly to my questions as if a flood of memories overtook him. His time is running out, making this a most precious moment.
