Heimir Bjarnason is a director and editor based in Reykjavik, Iceland.
Heimir got his start as an editor which led to work on projects such as the Netflix comedy special "Pardon My Icelandic", various tv programmes, the upcoming series about Iceland's response to the Covid pandemic "The Storm" and his debut feature "Redux".
Heimir is also one of the producers of the horror film "It Hatched", which had its world premiere at the Austin Film Festival 2021.
First conceived as a bombastic action thriller while I was in high school, Redux has taken many forms over the years before settling into a story that felt more personal.
It’s about Ragna, the aimless wanderer following others down a well-trodden path because it might lead to a comfortable life. It’s about Arna, the rebel without a cause who thinks the world has it out for her … or maybe it’s the other way around. It’s about Julius and his inability to let go of a life he’s pre-planned down to every last detail. These characters get thrown on a collision course as a person close to them all, Sara, is found dead at the start of the film.
But why is that personal? Well, for many reasons but one moment stands out. In 2017 I was on the board of the political party Bright Future which decided to end their coalition with the other government parties following a scandal, effectively collapsing Iceland’s government. It was at this moment that I didn’t understand what I was doing there. I wasn’t involved because it was my heart’s desire. I had simply been following others ideals - switching between my family’s more traditional views or latching onto some near-minded anarchist that wanted to “take down the man”. This sudden identity crisis brought me to Redux and to Ragna and for that I will always be grateful.
