REDt'BLUE
Redt'Blue is a documentary short, focusing on how, and why, the ex-mining town constituency of Mansfield swung from the Labour party, which had held it for a consecutive 94-years, to the Conservative party in the 2017 snap-election. A party which had not claimed the seat since its creation in 1885.

Nominee - 'Best Documentary-Short'
Jay Martin is a Nottingham-based filmmaker, with an unparalleled passion for visual storytelling. Jay began studying at the Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies in September of 2015, from there he began to develop Catharsis, his directorial debut. The film was made over a year, in, and around the greater Nottinghamshire area, with the help of some of the most dedicated, and passionate creatives in the Midlands. Jay now works as a freelance director. In May of 2017, Jay began developing his next short film project under the working title: 'After Dark'. In early 2019, Jay also began to develop his first documentary project, 'REDt'BLUE', set to release in 2021.
'🔴Redt'Blue is a documentary short, focusing on how, and why, the ex-mining town constituency of Mansfield swung from the Labour party, which had held it for a consecutive 94-years, to the Conservative party in the 2017 snap-election. A party which had not claimed the seat since its creation in 1885.
The documentary will sharply focus on an ex-pit worker, who has voted for the Labour party their entire life, but has seen many of his former colleague, who were destroyed by Thatcherism, turn to the Conservatives for a better future. This will show first hand, why a large majority of voters felt disenfranchised by the Labour party in the Mansfield and Ashfield constituency, and why Ben Bradleys’ Conservative vision for the area resonated with so many voters.
We will then supplement this personal point of view with interviews that both juxtapose, and support our ex-pit workers thoughts and feelings on the situation. Using him as a bedrock for the typical Mansfield constituent, and funneling his viewpoint into our questioning of other key figures. These range from past and present MPs, to local industry leaders, and life-long supporters who maintained; or swung to another party during the unexpected commotion of the 2017 snap-election.
This culminating in a documentary-short which sheds light on one of the biggest surprises of the last election, and hopefully uncovers the various factors which led to the constituency changing hands so unexpectedly. It’s my belief that this film has the potential to attract both national and local attention, from both sides of the aisle.
Leaders of both primary political parties have a vested interest in maintaining and retaking the Mansfield constituency as a means of reaffirming their mandates’ resonation with the working class people of this country. It is my goal with this film to enlighten the people of this community as to our current political standing, as a means of creating a more perceptive voter base come the next election.
By the time the credits of the film role, I want to have uncovered why exactly Mansfield changed from Redt’Blue.🔵'
