Director Statement

According to recent statistics, the Brazilian police is one of the most violent in the world. The victims are mostly the young black men of the poor neighborhoods in the large cities. The cases are rarely investigated and many mothers are left to live in ignorance about the fate of their child after an encounter with the military police. The history of Geovane is different: his father, a simple craftsman would not rest until finding the whereabouts of his son. Besides telling the drama of Geovane’s father, the objective of Restless is to understand the reasons for this level of police violence. Where do the responsibilities lie? With the military police? Or with society itself? Why does the body of the black man, enslaved for centuries in Salvador which was the port of entry of the largest slave trade in South America, continue to be the object of so much hatred? The documentary weaves the investigation of the case with a debate about the historic and social roots of police brutality.
