Qurbana

Qurbana is a Malayalam word derived from the term Qurbono in Eastern Syriac, meaning sacrifice or offering, often referring to the holy ritual of Syrian Christians. The documentary meditates alongside a Syrian Christian priest, on the melodrama of a Qurbana day during the lockdown in the rural town of Kumily in Kerala, India. The documentary is also the filmmaker looking at his father.
Religion is a mass activity which has thrived on an illusion, influencing to great lengths, the lives of individuals and states. Religion is built upon the psyche of masses largely using fear as a tool. The pandemic and the subsequent lockdown has brought up unprecedented fear that stopped people from places of worship like never in recent times.
We might have, meanwhile stopped a moment to look within than heavenwards for peace. We might have loved a moment than fear.

Director Statement

The film is a personal note from watching my father who is a priest in the Syrian Orthodox Church, showed in the film, and mother, also showed in the film, and our house, which always functioned in relation to the church. As I began to question the beliefs I was presented with, it was something I could never ask out in the open in the surroundings I was in, which led me to search for people and places to run away to. The film is also a looking back for me at my home, as i stay at home for a long period for the first time after school.
