Director Statement

If you’re lucky enough to have them, parents are really something. I am a mother now, and I must admit I’m struck by what I owe my parents and what I’ve gotten wrong about them.

Because I had good parents, I spent the first couple decades of my life thinking they were responsible for my happiness. And in the early, helpless years, they were. Reaching the independence of a drivers’ license and college or moving out, you’re confronted with answering your own needs, discovering a way to respond to pain that doesn’t end your life.

The first few times I weathered my own disappointment were formative. A box of darkness alchemized into a sense of value – a self – that I could hold. In parenting books they encourage not to react when your toddler falls down. If you wince or gasp, the child reads your reaction as theirs.

In this film, Maya and Taylor come to discover their feelings purely and through each other. They take their own temperature. They forgive and admit to their needs. Self-acceptance, in this way, is sovereignty and puts the crown of worthiness back on young girls’ heads.
