QUINTO. The one born under the counter.

“Quinto. The one born under the counter” tells the story and development of the Italian street market from the post-war to the present day through the memories of a real-life street peddler of the town of Parma. Roberto Quintavalla, nicknamed “Quinto”, born in 1947 in an ancient family of trader, reveals a fascinating world made up of completely unique times, characters and events but which has now all but disappeared: the traditional street market.

Director Biography - Davide Bardi, Carlo Fineschi

DAVIDE BARDI
Actor, voice actor, director, professional storyteller and musician, Davide has dedicated his entire career to storytelling in theater, film and television and under any artistic form. A trilingual (Italian, French C2, English C2) multi-talented and versatile artist, he has been active on the Italian and international scene since 2009. He graduated in 2009 a B.A. with a degree in Performing Arts (Acting, Screenwriting and Directing) at the Link Campus University in Rome with a grade of 110/110 cum laude and graduated in acting at the European Academy of Dramatic Art - Link Academy in Rome and at LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art). During his training and studies, he won the Erasmus European project and went to study at the Riga Academy of Dramatic Art in Latvia. With a deep, unmistakable and distintive vocal timbre, he works since 2008 as a dubber, voice actor and radio speaker for the major Italian dubbing companies. Davide is one of the official Italian voice narrators of Sky documentaries, Sky Crime, History Channel, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, Netflix. Since 2009 he has been teaching performative Storytelling in italy as well as abroad worldwide. In 2019, he has been teaching performative Storytelling at the National Academy of Dramatic Art "Silvio D'Amico" in Rome, the most important theater academy in Italy.

CARLO FINESCHI
Carlo Fineschi was born in Siena Italy. He is a director of cinema and theater. He studied and graduated as a filmmaker in the United States at the Maine Workshops in Rockport Maine (USA) in 2006.

DAVIDE BARDI
Davide, attore, doppiatore, regista ha dedicato la sua intera carriera al racconto di storie in teatro, cinema e televisione e sotto qualsiasi forma artistica. Artista trilingue (italiano, francese, inglese) poliedrico e versatile, è attivo sulla scena italiana ed internazionale dal 2009. Consegue nel 2009 la laurea B.A. in Performing Arts (Recitazione, Sceneggiatura e Regia) presso la Link Campus di Roma con votazione 110/110 e lode e si diploma in recitazione presso l’Accademia Europea d’Arte Drammatica - Link Academy a Roma e presso la LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art). Con un timbro vocale profondo e inconfondibile, lavora dal 2008 come doppiatore per le più importanti società di doppiaggio italiane. Davide è voce narrante dei documentari Sky, Sky Crime, History Channel, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, Netflix. Dal 2009 insegna Storytelling performativo in workshop tenuti sia in italia che all’estero. Nel 2019 è stato insegnante di Storytelling presso l’Accademia Nazionale D’Arte Drammatica “Silvio D’Amico” di Roma.

CARLO FINESCHI
Carlo Fineschi è regista, attore e autore di cinema e teatro. Ha studiato e si è diplomato come filmaker negli Stati Uniti al Maine Workshops di Rockport Maine (USA) nel 2006. Come regista di audiovisivo ha diretto documentari, cortometraggi e webseries, alcuni presentati in importanti festival come “Documenta Madrid” e altri vincitori di premi come il Sergio Leone Day. Come regista di teatro ha realizzato spettacoli sia in Italia che all’estero in luoghi prestigiosi come Festival di Edimburgo ,Teatro Eliseo(Roma), Teatro Olimpico(Roma),Teatro India( Roma), Piccolo Teatro di Milano, al Burg Theater di Vienna, Essen in Germania, Festival dei Due Mondi di Spoleto, Roma Europa Festival, Museo MAXXI. Nel 2015 è stata scritta una tesi di laurea dal titolo "Carlo Fineschi- indagine su un regista surreale e concreto" discussa e depositata presso L'Università degli studi di Roma tre, Roma.
E’ stato docente di regia e recitazione presso la scuola Link Academy e il Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia.

Director Statement

"Quinto: The One Born Under the Market Stall" is a story that offers a behind-the-scenes look at one of the oldest and most fascinating trades ever, one that has never been thoroughly explored: the street vendor. Against the backdrop of this narrative flows the history of Italy from the post-war period to the present day, charting the development of the marketplace up to modern times. The film is not only a tribute to an ancient craft but also a journey through decades of social and cultural changes, seen through the eyes of a man "born under the market stall," who has dedicated his entire life to the market: Roberto Quintavalla, known as "Quinto."

In "Quinto's" tales, there is always something dreamlike. His face seems to belong to another time, and his appearance is reminiscent of film reels or ancient objects covered with a sheen of time and life.

The viewer is transported to a world that we have all experienced but only know superficially: waking up at dawn, loading the van or cart as was done in the past, changing market squares every day, meeting different people, and managing to sell with the sole art of charm. A life similar to that of touring actors.

The documentary, not coincidentally, begins with a symbolic phrase spoken by Angiolina, Quinto's grandmother, a legendary figure in the street markets of Parma: "Remember, you are in the theater." The documentary develops on the analogy between market and theater, bringing to life the atmosphere of the market as a true "theater performance."

The documentary is a narrated journey through various types of cinematic language. To reconstruct scenes from the protagonist's past life and give shape to his thoughts and emotions, 2D frame-by-frame graphic animation, entirely hand-drawn, has been used. It is as if the protagonist, through his words, sketches his memories like a moving painting. The atmosphere created is a continuous contrast between dreamlike images, reflecting faded memories of the past, and raw footage of daily life.

Archival footage is integrated into the narrative as gateways through which the viewers can immerse themselves in both Italian history and the history of street markets.

“Quinto. Quello nato sotto il banco” è un racconto che offre uno sguardo da dietro le quinte su uno dei mestieri più antichi ed affascinanti di sempre, mai raccontato approfonditamente: il venditore ambulante. A fare da sfondo al racconto scorre la storia italiana dal dopoguerra ad oggi e lo sviluppo del Mercato di piazza fino ai giorni nostri. Il film non è solo un tributo a un mestiere antico, ma anche un viaggio attraverso decenni di cambiamenti sociali e culturali, visti attraverso gli occhi di un uomo “nato sotto il banco”, che ha dedicato tutta la sua vita al mercato: Roberto Quintavalla, detto “Quinto”.
Nei racconti di “Quinto” c’è sempre qualcosa di onirico. Il suo volto sembra appartenere ad un altro tempo ed il suo aspetto ricorda i film a pellicola oppure gli oggetti antichi ricoperti dalla patina del tempo e della vita.
Lo spettatore è trasportato in un mondo che tutti quanti abbiamo vissuto, ma che conosciamo soltanto in apparenza: svegliarsi all’alba, caricare il furgone o il carretto, come si faceva nei tempi passati, cambiare ogni giorno piazza, incontrare persone sempre diverse, riuscire a vendere con la sola arte dell’incanto. Una vita simile a quella degli attori di giro.
Il documentario non a caso inizia con una frase simbolo, detta da Angiolina, nonna di Quinto, leggendaria figura del mercato ambulante di Parma: “Ricordati che sei in teatro”. Il documentario si sviluppa proprio sull’analogia mercato/teatro facendo rivivere l’atmosfera del mercato inteso come vero e proprio “spettacolo di teatro”.
Il documentario è un viaggio narrato attraverso diverse tipologie di linguaggio filmico. Per ricostruire le scene di vita passata del protagonista e dare forma ai suoi pensieri e alle sue emozioni, è stata utilizzata l'animazione grafica 2D frame by frame, realizzata interamente a mano. È come se il protagonista, attraverso le sue parole, disegnasse i suoi ricordi come in un dipinto in movimento. L’atmosfera che si crea è un contrasto continuo tra immagini oniriche, che riflettono le memorie sbiadite del passato, e riprese crude della vita quotidiana.
Le immagini di repertorio sono inserite nel racconto come portali di accesso attraverso i quali lo spettatore può immergersi nella storia italiana e in quella del mercato ambulante.
