Which Homeland / Quale Patria

Notes on the sidelines of the film
“We are a country without memory. Which is to say without history. Italy removes
its recent past, it loses it in the oblivion of the television ether, it keeps only his memories, the
fragments that could make it comfortable for its contortions, for its conversions. But
Italy is a circular, Gattopardesco country, where everything changes to remain as it is. In which
everything flows in order not to really pass. If Italy took care of its history, its memory, it would realize that the regimes do not come from nothing, they are the result of ancient poisons, of invincible metastases, it would learn that in this country special in living great, but with patches in the ass, its vices are cyclical, and they repeated embodied by different men with the same cynicism, the same indifference to ethics, with the same allergy to consistency, to a moral tension ".

The words written by Pier Paolo Pasolini in 1975 still perfectly describe the deep soul of Italy. This forgetful country, in which the direct witnesses of history are fewer and fewer and in which every day attempts are made to mystify what fascism was, up to justification if not regret, made me feel the urgency to write, together with Luca, this film. At the base of the project there is first of all a great work of archive research; we sifted through the photographic backgrounds and used old tapes in which, in the 1980s, the testimonies of numerous partisans and relays active in the Romagna Resistance had been recorded. The real voices, the chewed words, the dialectal expressions are the soul and the skeleton of this work. Which Homeland is a film made up of short stories, fragments of memory; it is a collective fresco just as the Resistance was a collective act.
The story of Gianni Ravegnani, protagonist of our film and educaid volunteer in 2008 and 2009 in the Gaza Strip (Palestine), is intertwined with the events narrated by the partisans. The parallelism between the Resistance to Nazi-Fascism and the Resistance of the Palestinian people is a way to actualize what happened in our country 75 years ago and remind the spectators that, around the world, peace and democracy are still little more than a mirage.

«Noi siamo un paese senza memoria. Il che equivale a dire senza storia. L’Italia rimuove il
suo passato prossimo, lo perde nell’oblio dell’etere televisivo, ne tiene solo i ricordi, i
frammenti che potrebbero farle comodo per le sue contorsioni, per le sue conversioni. Ma
l’Italia è un paese circolare, gattopardesco, in cui tutto cambia per restare com’è. In cui
tutto scorre per non passare davvero.
Se l’Italia avesse cura della sua storia, della sua memoria, si accorgerebbe che i regimi
non nascono dal nulla, sono il portato di veleni antichi, di metastasi invincibili, imparerebbe
che questo Paese speciale nel vivere alla grande, ma con le pezze al culo, che i suoi vizi
sono ciclici, si ripetono incarnati da uomini diversi con lo stesso cinismo, la medesima
indifferenza per l’etica, con l’identica allergia alla coerenza, a una tensione morale».

Le parole scritte da Pier Paolo Pasolini nel 1975 descrivono ancora perfettamente l'anima profonda dell'Italia. Questo paese smemorato, in cui i testimoni diretti della storia sono sempre meno e in cui ogni giorno si tenta di mistificare quello che è stato il fascismo, sino alla giustificazione se non al rimpianto, mi ha fatto avvertire l'urgenza di scrivere, insieme a Luca, questo film. Alla base del progetto vi è innanzitutto un grande lavoro di ricerca d'archivio; abbiamo setacciato i fondi fotografici e abbiamo utilizzato vecchie musicassette in cui, negli anni '80, erano state incise le testimonianze di numerosi partigiani e staffette attivi nella Resistenza Romagnola. Le voci vere, le parole masticate, le espressioni dialettali sono l'anima e lo scheletro di questo lavoro. Quale Patria è un film fatto di piccoli racconti, di frammenti di memoria; è un affresco collettivo così come la Resistenza è stata un atto collettivo.
La storia di Gianni Ravegnani, protagonista del nostro film e volontario nel 2008 e 2009 di Educaid nella Striscia di Gaza (Palestina), si intreccia con le vicende narrate dai partigiani. Il parallelismo tra la Resistenza al nazi-fascismo e la Resistenza del popolo Palestinese è un modo per attualizzare quanto avvenuto nel nostro paese oramai 75 anni fa e ricordare agli spettatori che, in giro per il mondo, pace e democrazia sono ancora poco più che un miraggio.
