Pyrocene

It is the year 2126, and we are already feeling the deadly impacts of the Pyrocene era on a planetary scale. Now, we draw upon the evocations of the ancestral traditions of the peoples of Guinea-Bissau to ask Nature for peace and salvation.

Every era has its time, every species has its history. It could not be any different for the human race. In English, ‘PIROCENO’ translates as ‘Pyrocene’. Coined by the historian Stephen J. Pyne, a specialist in fires, this term describes our current geological era as an ‘Age of Fire’, comparable in scale and planetary impact to the Pleistocene Ice Ages. The concept explores how humans have evolved from mere users of fire into a dominant geological force, capable of altering the Earth’s climate and ecosystems through combustion.
In this fable-like film, we journey through a realm of speculative imagination set within a meta-apocalyptic horizon, exploring the tension between the present and what human existence might become a century from now. For it would be difficult, without a measure of denial, to ignore that we are already living through the early stages of a slow and morbid ecological apocalypse.

Director Biography - Welket Bungué

Welket Bungué nasceu em 1988 na Guiné-Bissau, é artista multidisciplinar, de etnia Balanta. Reside em Berlim, mas trabalha artisticamente ao nível internacional. É co-fundador da produtora KUSSA, licenciado em Teatro no ramo de Atores (ESTC/Lisboa) e pós-graduado em Performance (UniRio/RJ). Em 2021 tornou-se membro da Academia Europeia de Cinema.

Os seus filmes têm circulado internacionalmente por inúmeros festivais de cinema tais como Berlinale, ABFF (EUA), Africlap (França), Zanzibar Intl. Film Fest., Afrikamera (Berlim), BFI London e Sheffield DocFest (UK), IndieLisboa, DocLisboa, Fest. Intl. de Cinema do Rio de Janeiro ou o Stockholm Dansfilmfestival. Em 2020 Welket é o protagonista de 'Berlin Alexanderplatz' (Berlinale 2020), realizado por Burhan Qurbani, em que a sua interpretação lhe valeu uma indicação ao Urso de Prata, uma nomeação como “Melhor Ator Principal” nos prémios LOLA da Academia Alemã de Cinema (Deutscher Filmpreis), e ainda o prémio “Cavalo de Alumínio” para “Melhor Ator” no Festival Int. de Cinema de Estocolmo.

Nos anos 2021 e 2022 Welket Bungué foi distinguido como uma das “Personalidades Negras Mais Influente da Lusofonia” na cerimónia anual POWERLIST 100, que é uma aliança entre a BANTUMEN e diferentes plataformas de comunicação lusófonas para homenagear e celebrar a multiplicidade, excelência e potência de pessoas negras que partilham o Português como língua oficial.

Em 2022 Welket publicou seu primeiro livro 'Corpo Periférico' que está disponível na plataforma Amazon, onde compartilha relatos da história de sua vida e trajeto artísticos desde 2006, através de imagens e de entrevistas, e descreve a criação do seu próprio método de cinema de autorrepresentação. Em 2023 Welket foi contemplado com a bolsa de apoio Gwaertler Grant, destinada à produção e pesquisa artística, atribuída pela prestigiada instituição suíça Gwaertler Foundation.

Welket está nos elencos principais das séries brasileiras ‘Reencarne’ para a Globo Play com direção de Bruno Safadi, e ‘Pssica’ para a Netflix com direção de Fernando Meirelles (‘Cidade de Deus’, ‘The Two Popes’) e Quico Meirelles (‘Pico da Neblina’), ambas as estreias estão prevista para 2025.

Welket Bungué is originally from the Balanta tribe, was born in Xitole (Guinea-Bissau) on February 7th, 1988. He is a Portuguese-Guinean actor and film director based in Berlin, a co-founder of Kussa Productions. He holds a degree in Theater from the Actors branch (ESTC / Lisbon) and a postgraduate degree in Performance (UniRio / Brazil). He is a Permanent Member of the Portuguese Academy of Cinema, the Deutsche Filmakademie, and a member of the European Film Academy since 2021. Its films have been screened on several international film festivals, such as Berlinale, ABFF (US), Africlap (France), Zanzibar Intl. Film Fest., Afrikamera (Berlin), IndieLisboa, DocLisboa, Rio de Janeiro IFF, and the Stockholm Dansfilmfestival. He also directed the short films 'Mudança' (2021), 'I Am Not Pilatus'(2019), 'Arriaga'(2019), and 'Bastien'(2016) in which he was distinguished with the “Best Actor Award” and “Best First Film Award” by Shortcutz Awards 2017. In 2019 he was awarded with an “Angela Award - On The Move” at the Subtitle Festival in Kilkenny (Ireland), by Richard Cook and Steve Cash. Welket Bungué starred the cast of 'Joaquim', by Marcelo Gomes (Intl. Competition Berlinale 2017), 'Body Electric' (IFFR 2017), 'Kaminey' (2009), by Vishaal Bahardwaj, 'Letters From War' (Intl. Competition Berlinale 2016), by Ivo M. Ferreira. In 2020 Welket won the "MAAT Grand Prize - FUSO Intl. Festival of Video Art of Lisbon" with his film 'Metalheart', also starred Franz Biberkopf in 'Berlin Alexanderplatz' (Berlinale 2020), directed by Burhan Qurbani, which lead him to a nomination as “Best Male Lead” at the LOLA awards of the German Film Academy (Deutscher Filmpreis), and grant him a “Aluminum Horse Prize” for “Best Actor” at the Stockholm Intl. Film Festival. In 2021, he won the 'Cinema Industry Prestige Award' at the 25th RDP Africa - Prestige Award Cerimony (Portugal). Welket is part of the main cast of the new film from David Cronenberg, 'Crimes of the Future', among the actors Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, and Kristen Stewart.

Estamos em 2126, já sentimos os impactos mortais da era piroceno em escala planetária. Agora, usamos os evocatidos da tradicão ancestral dos povos da Guiné-Bissau, para pedir paz e salvação à Natureza.

Todas as eras têm o seu tempo, todas as espécies têm a sua história. Não poderia ser diferente com a raça humana. Em inglês, «PIROCENO» traduz-se por «Pyrocene». Cunhado pelo historiador especializado em incêndios Stephen J. Pyne, este termo descreve a nossa era geológica atual como uma «Era do Fogo», comparável em escala e impacto planetário às Idades do Gelo do Pleistoceno. O conceito explora a forma como os seres humanos passaram de simples utilizadores do fogo a uma força geológica dominante, capaz de alterar o clima e os ecossistemas da Terra através da combustão.

Neste filme fabular, percorremos uma especulação imaginada sobre um tempo meta-apocalítico, suspenso entre o presente e aquilo que poderemos ser dentro de um século. Porque não podemos, sem alguma dose de negação, ignorar que já vivemos os sintomas de um lento e mórbido apocalipse ecológico.

O nosso futuro depende da crença de que somos infinitos, finitos, espirituais, materiais, ou simplesmente intemporais e inexistentes? A nossa consciência planetária lembra-nos, incessantemente, da necessidade de desacelerar e de regressar à nossa essência, em comunhão com o Todo.

Um filme imersivo e inquietantemente profético, que desperta compaixão e convida à reflexão sobre a nossa condição de criaturas místicas, eternamente à procura de uma justiça divina que não compreendemos.
