Experiencing Interruptions?

Protecting Our Territory 360

“Protecting Our Territory 360” combines a 360 video that positions the viewer as the imaginary classmate "Cachufina" with behind-the-scenes documentation of how the Peruvian students used an action camera and mobile phones to co-create an immersive experience of their lives and the natural world.

Bishu Cine is a non-profit cultural association that uses film, audiovisual media, the arts, and new information and communication technologies as tools for social change. Together with the Great Ingenious Readers Club of Carabayllo (located on the outskirts of Lima, Peru), Bishu Cine created the participatory exhibition "Protecting Our Territory and Environment," which gave twenty young people their first virtual reality experience. Bishu Cine began by adapting the interests of the club's members to a story based on everyday spaces, such as their soccer field and the nearby Bed of Clouds in the Spring Hills, and then helped them film scenes with a specialized camera to capture 360-degree landscapes and transcoded the footage so they could explore them with virtual reality headsets. The experience strengthened the young people's collective sense of belonging and care for their surroundings and emphasized the importance of preserving environmental memories through their own perspectives.

Director Statement

Virtual reality is often described as the future of storytelling, but too many people are excluded from shaping that future. I believe VR creation should be more accessible to marginalized communities because immersive media is a tool of perspective and power. VR allows audiences to experience stories from inside lived realities, but if access to the technology remains limited to privileged groups, the medium risks repeating the same inequities that have long existed in traditional media industries. Making VR accessible means giving communities the tools, training, and creative ownership to tell stories on their own terms. In other words, representation alone is not enough — marginalized creators should not only appear in immersive experiences, but also help build them. As a director, I am interested in creating collaborative, community-centered pathways into immersive storytelling. The future of VR should reflect a diversity of voices, experiences, and imaginations, and that future depends on who is empowered to create it.
