Priob

We meet a young woman on her windowsill in the early hours of the morning, while she is in conversation with her late grandfather, The Coal Man, who lives in the clouds above and communicates through radio waves. Priob is a film about our inner children and the people who raised them, wherever they are.

Director Biography

Choirstaidh Iona NicArtair is a Gaelic-speaking multidisciplinary artist and content creator from Greenock, living and working in Glasgow. NicArtair attended Gaelic Medium Education from 2-18, first at Highlanders’ Academy Nursery and Primary School in Greenock, then Glasgow Gaelic High School. In 2018, NicArtair graduated from the Glasgow School of Art with a BA (Hons) in Painting and Printmaking. Her artwork mainly centres around Gaelic language and culture, Scottish and Irish folklore, grief, love, and childhood.

In 2021 she was named the Young Gaelic Ambassador of the Year by Bòrd na Gàidhlig at the Gaelic Awards for her work on her social media platforms, after starring in BBC ALBA’s “A’ Chùil”, a children’s art series in the same year. In 2022, Choirstaidh was commissioned by Theatre Gu Leòr to produce a piece of digital theatre for the ‘Ceangal/Cwlwm’ project, entitled ‘NicFiona’. ‘NicFiona’ follows four generations of women from NicArtair’s family while documenting the social history of the working class women of Inverclyde.
