Pixie Cram is a live-action filmmaker and animator who lives in the Ottawa-Gatineau region of Canada. She creates work on themes of nature, technology, and war. Her films have screened at festivals in North America, China and Europe, including Filmfest Dresden, Animafest Cyprus, Planet in Focus, Dawson City International Short Film Festival, Beijing Animation Week, and the Ottawa International Animation Festival. On top of her own art practice, she works as a freelance director, cinematographer and editor.
This short film, inspired by historical events relating to nuclear war and nuclear energy, in particular, the Fukushima and Chernobyl reactor meltdown - takes as its central theme our relationship to the land and our dependence on it.
In making Pragmatopia, I consulted with various individuals to ensure that my approach to the material was respectful of the traditions of First Nations, from whom much of the knowledge of food gathering and shelter preparation derives.
These individuals included an indigenous filmmaker from this region and the film's lead, indigenous actor Sage Wright, with whom I consulted throughout the production.
I hope you enjoy the film.
