With Potwash, I wanted to capture a particular world that feels both familiar and rarely explored on screen — the summer jobs of rural England’s working class in the 2010s. It’s a world I knew first-hand as a teenager, and one that carries its own pressures, humour, and quiet intensity. The kitchens of countryside pubs are places where young people work for minimum wage and collide with authority (adults). But the question is which side is more mentally stable and mature?
I knew curating the perfect cast was central to achieving this. I sought out performers who not only understood the material but fitted their roles. They are also local (or originally from) the region
Setting the story in 2010 gave us a specific tapestry to tell the story within — a time not far in the past, but already somewhat nostalgic. From the clothes, burned cd, wired earphones and the soundtrack, every choice was made to ground the film in that era. The music in particular plays a huge role, helping define both the period and the emotional undercurrent of the characters/story.
