Plasticnic
“Plasticnic” is an animated short poem that wryly depicts the extent and impact of the accumulation of plastic in the environment as people ceaselessly continue to purchase, use and discard single-use plastics. We seek out and enjoy nature while simultaneously destroying it.

Fiona Tinwei Lam (poet, narrator, producer, co-director) was born in Scotland, and has lived in Vancouver, Canada since the age of four. Lam’s third collection of poetry Odes & Laments celebrates the overlooked wonder and beauty in the everyday, while lamenting harm to our ecosystems. She has authored two previous poetry books, a children’s book, edited The Bright Well: Contemporary Canadian Poems on Facing Cancer, and co-edited Love Me True: Writers Reflect on the Ins, Outs, Ups & Downs of Marriage with Jane Silcott. Lam won The New Quarterly’s Nick Blatchford Prize and was a finalist for the City of Vancouver Book Award. Her work appears in more than 40 anthologies, including The Best Canadian Poetry in English (both 2010 and 2020 editions) and Forcefield: 77 Women Poets of BC. Her award-winning poetry videos have screened at festivals locally and internationally, including thrice at the Zebra international poetry film festival in Germany. Her poems have thrice appeared on BC's Poetry in Transit. Currently Vancouver’s 6th Poet Laureate, she teaches creative writing at Simon Fraser University (Continuing Studies) in Vancouver, BC, Canada. www.fionalam.net
Tisha Deb Pillai (animator and co-director) was in born in India and currently resides in Vancouver BC, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Media Arts in Animation from Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Her animation film If You Fall has screened at various film festivals including Cinanima, Ottawa International Animation Festival, TIFF Canada’s Top Ten, NY International Children's Film Festival, Northwest Animation Festival, Animation Nights New York, and Vancouver International Women in Film Festival. If You Fall has also been added to the permanent collection at the Education Department Resources at the Museum of Modern Art. As an animator living between Canada and India, her work has been inspired from two vastly distinct worlds of colours, cultures and ideas. She enjoys telling stories from personal experiences and memories, and weaving them into narratives with a universal theme.
Poetry videos make poetry accessible and enjoyable to a wide range of people. Humour and animation are wonderful ways to convey and express both poetic ideas and environmental messages in a multi-layered, nonlinear and enjoyable way.
