Pirinha
Pirinha is a young woman's journey through the recesses of her subconscious in search of herself and coming to terms with her past. On her journey, she encounters the so-called 'evil' creatures from Cape Verdean folklore that she feared so much as a child, only to discover that "true evil" has its roots in someone else. These encounters, however, are sweetened by memories of the most beautiful phase of her life - time spent with her grandmother, a woman ahead of her time who had a peculiar knowledge of traditional medicine and treated her granddaughter with it whenever needed. As a result, Pirinha is also a story of healing steeped in the cultural rituals of Cape Verde. It is a unique journey, but unfortunately one that is so familiar to many women, yet one that brings hope that wounds can be healed, showing that sometimes even supposed demons can bring pirinhas (traditional cape-verdean sweets).

Pirinha is my second film and brings the story I lived in the first person.
The film describes real events that took place in the past and this led to the need to write a docfic, exploring fictional elements, some reconstruction of situations with amateur actors, and the use of voice over. The voice over will be done by me, leading the viewer through my own story.
My intention is, without romanticizing or overshadowing the seriousness of the issue approached, to bring a poetic dimension to the film, basically showing a harsh reality in a poetic way. And first of all, to through my own katharsis bring the healing to all who need and awareness to others.
Written and produced from a very personal point of view and from a very honest place, Pirinha invites anyone who sees it to accompany the protagonist – a young woman - through various events in her life, all of which are interconnected. We accompany her in the battle to understand her own history, find herself, free herself from all bonds and conquer her freedom to be.
The film addresses, among other themes, the issue of childhood abuse and mental illnesses that may, as a consequence, arise in the lives of the victims. The core of the film is however the struggle of a young woman to awaken her conscience, the way she faces traumatic events, the battle she fights to perceive them, how she faces her demons and how she achieves healing.
Despite being a very personal story, unfortunately, it is a story common to many, many people across the globe, regardless of gender, age, society, culture or nationality. It is a phenomenon that knows no boundaries, timeless and universal, and that makes my film universal too.
