Nick Gaglia is a filmmaker whose passion for storytelling transcends mere entertainment; it serves as a vehicle for social change and human connection. His journey into filmmaking was deeply personal, shaped by his own harrowing experiences. Gaglia's inaugural feature, "Over the GW," delves into his two- and-a-half-year ordeal in an abusive, cult-like drug rehabilitation center during his youth.
Premiering at the 2007 Slamdance Film Festival, "Over the GW" defied expectations by securing a distribution deal immediately after its first screening, a feat unprecedented for an "under-the-radar" narrative feature in the festival's history. The film's critical acclaim resonated nationwide during its theatrical and Netflix release, amplifying Gaglia's voice in advocating against abuse and deception in teen rehabilitation programs. The New York Times hailed "Over the GW" as "the rehab drama is here to stay," recognizing its impact on the genre.
Gaglia's commitment to social advocacy continued with "Aaron Bacon" in 2009, shedding light on the tragic fate of a troubled teenager subjected to abuse in a wilderness drug-treatment facility. Premiering at the Shanghai International Film Festival, the film garnered international attention, further cementing Gaglia's reputation as a filmmaker unafraid to confront uncomfortable truths.
In addition to his feature work, Gaglia's directorial prowess extends to music videos and commercials, where he infuses his distinctive style into short-form storytelling. Gaglia honed his craft in video production at Google, bringing a unique blend of technical expertise and creative vision to his projects.
Beyond the camera, Gaglia actively engages in activism, leveraging his platform to speak out against adolescent treatment abuse. From Capitol Hill to media appearances on Dr. Phil and Fox News, Gaglia's advocacy reaches diverse audiences, sparking conversations and catalyzing change.
Recognizing his efforts, Gaglia received two humanitarian awards in 2013 from the Survivors of Institutional Abuse organization, honoring his contributions to raising awareness through film. His 2014 release, "Altered States of Plaine," showcased his versatility as a filmmaker, spanning four countries and earning acclaim at festivals worldwide while reaching audiences globally through television broadcasts.
In addition to his filmmaking endeavors, Gaglia has shared his expertise internationally by teaching acting workshops and lecturing on filmmaking and social activism at prestigious universities like NYU, nurturing the next generation of storytellers. His commitment to empowering voices extends beyond borders; in Mombasa, Kenya, he volunteered and mentored disenfranchised youth on how to harness the power of cinema to make their voices heard.
In 2024, Gaglia unveiled his latest cinematic endeavor, "PinkCity: A Psychedelic Meditation," weaving a tale of love, loss, and LSD, set against the vibrant tapestry of India. He took on the lead role, adding another dimension to his artistic repertoire. As Gaglia continues to craft stories that resonate on both personal and societal levels, his cinematic journey remains a testament to the transformative power of storytelling in shaping our understanding of humanity.
