PIECES OF AMY represents a 7 year journey. I emptied every drop of anxiety I had about the horrors of the drug addiction and the opioid crisis. I wanted to make the internal horror felt by addicts literal. To give their existential panic a face. An amorphous black shadow that follows them everywhere, and the more they try to salvage the broken pieces of their lives, the worse it gets.
At its core, this is a psychological horror film with a purpose—an examination of one woman’s downward spiral into opioid addiction and the suffocating uncertainty between her own shattered reality and the looming darkness that may—or may not—be stalking her.
From the start, I wanted the film to feel like a gripping character-driven theater piece, rather than a senseless parade of slasher violence. Thank GOD I found these actors, my DP, and my Editor. They are incredible. The film came out breathtaking!
It should feel like Terrence Malick and Gaspar Noe made a horror film together.
Ultimately PIECES OF AMY is a reflection of the very real terror faced by people struggling with opioid addiction, mental illness, and the nightmarish isolation that comes when no one believes you.
It’s my hope that this blend of psychological and supernatural dread won’t just terrify people, but that it will also spark empathy and conversation about the human stories lurking behind every dark corner and freeway underpass.
We’re thrilled for you to see this film. It came out INCREDIBLE!
